Just a reminder that you can read user reviews for most (American) vendors on The Garden Watchdog.

Ditto for Garden Watchdog. I worry my recommendations from 10 years ago may be dated.

Yes, that's a good point. When I first started gardening 20+ years ago, I ordered bareroot perennials from Jackson & Perkins and they were excellent size, but I don't know if or how that has changed. I've ordered from Bluestone more recently than that but probably close to a decade ago, and the roots were puny and not worth the price.

I like to get bare roots from the box stores or local nursery displays in the spring. They carry the common stuff, but once in a while you can find something a little out of the ordinary. The prices are good, you're not paying for shipping, and you can inspect the roots before you purchase. So I say that's the way to go if you're looking for common perennials.

I've gotten bareroot roses from Jackon & Perkins in the past and have been very pleased, but again that was a long time ago. David Austin sent lusty rose roots the last two times I ordered, and that was within the past few years, so I can recommend DA for English roses.

I don't like to plant bareroot trees or shrubs, so I'm no help there. I did end up ordering a bareroot cherry tree from Stark Brothers because it's a variety I haven't been able to find locally. It hasn't shipped yet, but I've been pleased with other items I've gotten from Stark (potted).

ETA: I also used to like get bareroot roses from the displays at the nurseries or big boxes in the spring --- here again they have a nice selection of common varieties and you can choose your own roots.

I also get any bare root I want from my local nursery. I know their suppliers, I know how the plants are harvested and stored and I know they are suited to my locale.

I never touch bare root perennials. I don't care who the vendor is, the quality is iffy at best, they are inevitably bagged and stored incorrectly and they tend to be sold too early or too late in the season. Very high rate of failure and nothing worth throwing away good money on.

I've ordered bare root trees, scions and rootstock from Fedco Seeds. i've also ordered vegetable seeds. They ship grafting material with your choice of March or April shipping. I've never had a problem with their products. They are out of asparagus roots this year as it's getting late in the season..
