For years I had a sxs due to space constraints and I recently built a new home where I selected Bosch cd fd. The freezer is not large in the Bosch though with the drawers I can keep things organized. The sxs was a full depth fridge. I do not have water and ice through the door in the Bosch and truthfully I don't miss it. my sxs used to spew ice so I always felt the floor near the fridge was messy. The Bosch has a water dispenser inside and there is an ice tray in the freezer. I do like how much cleaner this looks. The fridge feels so much more accessible to me with the fd. The drawers are about waist high and I love being able to fit full width items which I could do with the sxs.

I've always had SxS fridges and don't mind 'em. I do have an extra freezer and some stuff definitely won't fit in my SxS freezer. No problem with the ice maker.

I've had counter depth as well as standard and I do prefer standard because it mitigates some of the space issues. On my current full depth SxS, the glass shelves all slide out so nothing can hide in the back.

I've not liked FD fridges when using them but I would probably get used to it if I owned one.

This is personal preference and how you store/cook food.

I never liked the 36" SxS fridges we owned in the past. I didn't like the 48" SxS in my previous house either, as the freezer was still too narrow. I remodeled that kitchen and went with SZ columns with 36" fridge and 24" freezer. Really loved that combination. At 24" wide the freezer becomes a lot more practical.

In the house we just built I didn't want to spend as much on fridges or take up as much space, so I went with a 42" french door and I'm pretty happy with it so far. I also have an extra fridge in the laundry, a 30" french door, as I feed my large dogs raw food and needed more/separate freezer space and defrosting space.

I had a 42” SxS SubZero in my NYC kitchen for many years. The only thing I liked about it was that it was a SZ. When i renovated my kitchen, I actually replaced it with a 36” FD SZ, which i like infinitely better. And it doesnt feel any smaller. I can’t even comprehend taking another 6” away. And further space taken up by water/ice dispenser? Sounds like a joke to me.

So what did I loathe about the SXS? First, the freezer was not wide enough to fit a number of things i would want to store. Second, the produce bins were low, so I had to bend down. I open the fridge ten times at least for every time I open the freezer so bending to get things in the fridge is very inconvenient. In an over/under, that lettuce or piece of fruit is at waist level. And we didn’t even have a water or ice dispenser.

My downstairs neighbor had the 36” SZ SxS. She hated it and never stopped complaining about it.

The best configuration is Samsung, but wouldn't touch that brand whth a 10’pole. Whirpool’s doent have shelves in the freezer doors, unlike samsung. Now Now, if GE or ithers couod copy Samsung design…

@dan1888 thank you for finding these. Frigidaire and Dacor are my fav. has more Cu ft, configuration (freezer door shelves) and options (water/ice) I am looking for. But as noted, it is a samsung. Dacor is preferred due to internal ice/water dispenser.

Dacor says that frig is made in California of mostly US parts.

Storing and organizing is not easier. Storing: you can't fit a normal frozen pizza in the freezer. Can't fit deli trays in the fridge. And while you would think the freezer would be easier to organize, on account of the tall bank of shelves, both sides turn into narrow caves, where it's difficult to see anything that's not right at the front. Especially on the freezer side, since it's narrower.

I've got a French drawer fridge in the garage, waiting for the remodel to start. The freezer drawer is split into a bottom large compartment and a separate pullout above split into 2 compartments. It's so much easier to organize and locate my stuff.

I previously had a SxS and now have a French door with freezer on the bottom. The freezer in the SxS was great - but IMO, the improvement in freezer storage was overcompensated by how inconvenient the fridge side was. It was just too narrow for my liking, things got lost in the back, and it wasn't wide enough to hold large platters.

I agree that SxS is too narrow inside. Perhaps a single person that doesn’t like to cook might not mind. I have liked my French door Frigidaire with bottom drawer freezer. I also have a separate freezer for large bags, jams and preserves from the garden, entertaining. I also had a Whirlpool French door one in a previous house that was just fine.

We have a Frigidaire SxS in Cathedral City, and I like it a lot. The ice maker makes tons of ice, and we need that in the Palm Springs area. It has a decent amount of storage in the freezer, and the items are easy to get to. I also have adequate space in the refrigerator side, and we have two produce bins - so I don't have to stoop much to get produce. I store lettuce in a special lettuce bin on one of the shelves.

We have a Kitchenaid French door refrigerator with a middle shelf (my favorite part of it) for cold cuts, cheese, and vegetables, and a bottom drawer for the freezer, which I hate. I have to do a lot of stooping for that, and then I have to dig around and move things around to find most of what is in there. If you like chest freezers, then this will not bother you.

The icemaker in the KA fridge is fiddly, and I have already replace it once after about three years, but it was fairly easy to do myself - I just had to order the correct replacement parts. The first parts I got did not fit, and so I had to exchange them. After a few weeks of heavy use, the icemaker stops making ice, but after a couple of weeks of being idle, it starts again, and so I have to keep ice trays in the bottom drawer, which is extremely awkward.

I will not get a bottom freezer again.

I do like that I can put huge pans in the refrigerator part with French doors, but I very seldom need to do that and would not miss it if I didn't have that ability. I can always put things into pans that do fit.

I definitely wouldn't want a bottom freezer that was one large drawer. It needs to be split into two levels.

We lived in a condo with one for a year while we restored our home. Worst idea ever. You can't fit anything in either fridge or freezer. You'd think it would be easier to reach items, but it's actually the opposite. So hard to to see or grab anything when there's no room to move the other items to the side. Don't do it.

The 4 door frig has full width upper refrigerator storage with divided width freezer storage. Fine for me. I haven't needed freezer space for pizzas. Alternatives for me have been refrigerated $5-6 16" XL pizzas from Aldi and Walmart at 41-48oz. They 're fresh and bigger for the money and last in the frig for a week if necessary. I add other cheeses, sauteed onions and other topping to them anyway. Plus I have the pans for Buddy's Detroit deep dish and Chicago Uno with Wisconsin Brick I make from scratch. Dead simple dough recipe.

The PCB board Dacor uses is DA94-05319G. A Samsung part number. I'm checking on the compressor.
