Kitchen HELP - SOS

last modified: 4 years ago

Hello! I moved into my home a few years ago I've been putting off making updates to the kitchen because I'm unsure how to move forward. As you can see - its quite the eyesore! I do not want to invest in new countertops in favor of replacing the flooring to a darker wood (a little lighter than the table shown) which will be throughout the bottom level. My home has more grey and blue tones but the granite in the kitchen is venetian gold. Any suggestions? I've thought about painting the cabinets a dark grey but with darker wood and light grey walls (the color that is throughout my bottom level) I'm thinking it may make the room super dark. Currently the walls are a "sea breeze" but thinking of changing to grey to keep it consistent.

***Edit - I do not wish to paint the cabinets white or beige. Would like it to have a pop of color.

You have a very nice kitchen! Dark floors would look beautiful. The blue seems incongruent and easy to fix. Why not a rug that picks up the colors in your beautiful granite? Let that rug (perhaps) inspire a different paint color too. Good luck! p.s. (can you update the hanging light?) It would absolutely modernize your space!

What aspects do you dislike? Is gray trending out in your area already?

I would think twice about going darker on the floors, I have dark floors and they show all of the dust and crumbs. I feel like I have to sweep or vacuum all the time. I think your floors are a very nice color. Think about maybe replacing the counters to something less warm. A lighter less busy look maybe, and leave off the small counter splash and put up a nice tile backsplash. Then decide on paint from there. If you decide you must paint the cabinets I would take them to the ceiling with open boxes and lights and paint maybe a dark blue color. Personally I don't think it looks as bad as you do, but I don't have to live with it.

Nice kitchen. if those are hardwood floors, why not refinish them? Add knobs and pulls on your cabinets. Dark floors are awful to take care of, ask me how i know. Never again!

First - congratulations on your new home. You will probably hear this from everyone, but the best thing is to live there first before doing anything. It is tempting to come in and change things, but that can cause headaches down the road when you want to change more things.

Having those oak cabinets and golden toned countertop will make it difficult to bring in gray - it won't look good. If you feel the need to paint right away - I would just do a nice off white for a clean fresh look . As far as the floors - refinishing wood floors is certainly much easier when you don't live there. So go ahead and do that up front, just keep some of the stain in case you redo the kitchen and change the island which might expose wood from underneath.

Take your time to let the house speak to you, then make your decisions.

    Best of luck!

I think you need to change the floors before deciding any paint colors. Once they’re installed, better color choices will become apparent. Eliminating ivory from the list may be a mistake. I can envision your new floors working with your countertop but with a creamy white paint on the the cabinets. (I have SW Creamy in my kitchen. )
Post a new photo, or dilemma, once the new floors are in.

Thank you all so much for your feedback! I think to everyone's point, I will work on the floors first and go from there. Also - I appreciate the heads up on the darker floors! Perhaps I will go lighter. Unfortunately the floors are laminate and not waterproof so they will have to be fully replaced instead of being refinished. But I really appreciate everyone's suggestions - this was super helpful!!!

Thanks for the update. Amongst my kids and me and a sum total of about 12 homes owned, we’ve all come to agree that a mid tone wood is classic and gives you options. I do understand you have the cabinet color issue, so you may have to vary the tone of the floor. Frankly, I would go lighter rather than darker. And remember painting cabinets is expensive, too, (if you want a great result). I have rarely seen a great finish on cabinets that have a lot of wood grain. The best ones have been well prepped, grain filled, sanded, etc, ($$$). Personally I would keep the cabinets as is, or think about replacing. Just my 2 cents. Your kitchen is actually spacious and nicely laid out. No way it’s an eyesore! I’d trade you in a heartbeat for my unworkable, ugly kitchen.

I completly agree with the dark wood floor. I have them, and yes they are gorgeous. But after spending an hour vacuuming and scrubbing, I have to take a picture to admire later because it only looks clean about 5 minutes!

What a nice big kitchen you have! Since you want to replace the laminite at some point, now is the time to think about any changes to improve the layout.

It is hard to tell what the actual isle space is around the island. I was thinking you might be to able to rotate the island the other direction so the bar stools are not in front of the fridge. Also could you possibly push it back a little bit in order to give about a 48” isle in front of the range and allow more of a straight path from fridge to sink?
