dishwasher drawer

Do you like your dishwasher drawer?
Could you install a microwave drawer above it?

Single-drawer dishwasher units are not designed to sit on the floor, a support panel is required. The dishwasher would need to be on a base platform if at the bottom. They're intended to be placed at countertop height, which the microwave at the bottom would be very low for usage access and it probably also would require a support base. The two stacked together may not fit under a standard countertop height.

    Yes.

    I wouldn't even if I could.

I have a single drawer FP DW in an upstairs bonus/game room. Because it would be used infrequently I wanted it installed at the bottom with a deep drawer above. My cabinet folks modified a microwave cabinet to mount the dw in the bottom with a drawer on top. They used a 27” wide cabinet and the DW is paneled so it matches the drawer above. It is no different than the bottom drawer of a two drawer DW. I don’t know if there would an issue with the heat generated from the dw to have a MW drawer on top. If the dimensions work I am sure a cabinet can be fabricated for both but not sure if there are code or other electrical/plumbing issues.. I could see this in a game room/guest (in-law) suite arrangement. It is not something I would put in the main kitchen unless this is a very compact kitchen where every inch counts.

The drawer DW cleans most items - no where close to my Miele and it does not dry nearly as well either. It would not be my choice for a main DW. For an overflow/glassware dw it works for my needs.

Thanks, everyone. Just the perspectives I was seeking!

Yes Yes Yes on dishwasher drawers! My former housemate installed 2 drawers where 1 of the regular dishwashers used to be. no more bending over.

Single-drawer and double-drawer models are produced at the factory as such.

A two-drawer model is like a double-drawer filing cabinet, two drawers combined into one exterior cabinet with leveling legs to sit on the floor. One water supply connection (dual-solenoid valve to feed each drawer), two drain hoses (connect to the plumbing with a Y-adapter) and one power cord. It cannot be physically split into two separate units.

Two single-drawer models could be installed stacked together but each requires a support platform beneath (they don't have leveling legs, the top one should not physically sit on the bottom one, and the bottom one cannot sit on the floor), and each one has a separate water supply line and power connection.

I have a couple of single dishwasher drawers throughout my kitchen and pantry. I LOVE them…..would install again in a heartbeat. You do have to be careful how you load them because if you haphazardly pile dishes on top of one another, they will not get clean. Also, the drawers don’t hold a tremendous amount.

You will NOT be able to fit a microwave below or above the drawer….not enough room. There is only enough room for a fairly shallow drawer.

Here’s a couple of pics of the drawers….one with wood panel, and the other with the normal front…so as you can see, no room for a micro.

Although I do love the dishwasher drawers, they would definitely not be adequate if that was all i had….I also have a full size bosch which washes the bulk of my dishes.

I would get a dishwasher drawer ONLY for occasional use, or as a second dishwasher, maybe.

First , be sure that your dishes and/or pots and pans (if you don't typically hand wash those) will fit. Dishwasher drawers often don't accommodate being fully loaded with "larger" dishes, or soup bowls. I had one (and sold it on Craig's list) and the biggest issue for me was that if anything, say a spoon, fell under the rack, I had to remove all the already loaded dishes to retrieve it.

FP says it's 16.125" tall. In order to answer your question, we'd have to know the model of the MW you are intending to install and the maximum interior height of your cabinet. Generally speaking, the cabinet has 30" or less of interior height. It will vary by manufacturer, so altho all of the below is true, it may not be true for other models of either the Dish Drawers or Drawer Micros.

As more than one person said above, the dishwasher will need to rest on the cabinet floor. The cabinet floor doesn't reduce the interior height at all - so we don't care about adding a platform or any of that stuff for the dishwasher.

Using a random Sharp drawer, the cutout is 15 9/16” tall and the unit door is 15 7/8" (or 15.875"). In English, the cabinet maker installs a blank, strong panel across the front of the cabinet where the drawer micro is going. The installer cuts a hole in the blank panel for the microwave, the micro slides into the hole and is attached by screws.

So, add both things together and you get 32". So, maybe not be trying to to this with SMD2470AS or Fisher Paykel. Fisher Paykel makes almost all of the drawer dishwashers.

The people who have seen this done haven't seen it done with current models. FP changed the dimensions of the drawers so the top ones are deeper than the bottom ones BUT the only singles are the tops. This is the way the singles have always worked but they got a little taller about 5-6 years ago and maybe again since - I haven't been following appliances lately.

You'd think you could cut the bottom out of the cabinet and start down lower, but it's a devil's bargain - sacrificing your toes at the alter of your drawer micro. The toe kick would be only 1" tall and the cabinet would not be included in any warranty because you've changed it's structural integrity. And this is coming from a human who just crammed a 25" sink in a 24" cabinet.

If you and most of your family members are tall, you could raise the counter about 2" and pay the big buck for custom height base cabinets.

Maybe consider that dishwashers can be a bit further away from the sink and see if you could like, build them both into a tall double oven cabinet? Or maybe there are other ways to change your cabinet arrangement to accommodate this desire?

@bmorepanic, both standard and Tall (more depth for larger diameter plates or other items) single-drawer models available. Tall models require 18" cavity height. Non-tall (standard) require 16-1/4" height.

    Single-Drawer DishDrawer models

Single-drawer units do not have leveling legs and must sit on a support base. (Double-drawer models have leveling legs and sit on the floor of the kitchen, the cabintry base is removed if it exists, same as for a regular dishwasher.)

I'm not aware of a current manufacturer of drawer dishwashers on the U.S. market other than Fisher & Paykel. Whirlpool had a different design for a few years sold as Kenmore Elite, KitchenAid, Maytag, and Jenn-Air but those are long discontinued.

Regards to capacity, this all fit in one drawer. Photos are from 2007 for sharing on a discussion many years ago.

I have not had dishwasher drawers but have friends that had them. After about a year they took them out.......said they did not hold enough dishes and didn't get clean or dry.

I have both a Thermador DW and a single dishdrawer. That has worked well for our kitchen layout, and I would happily do it again. One friend has had dishdrawers for years, and she does a lot of entertaining. When it came time to replace her old DDs, she didn’t hesitate to get another double DD.

@dadoes I'm not sure why you shouted at me, I wasn't wrong. I was very careful to say that it only pertained to the pair I picked out. FP says 16 & 1/8" for a current model - picked at random but I looked at it's installation instructions. Some of them could be 1/8" taller, but they aren't going to fit under that particular drawer micro either.

I didn't think it worthwhile to get into intra-appliance spacing or that fractional bit of clearance needed for the drawers of both units to open or anything else cause it wasn't going to fit anyway.

If the person is installing at the BOTTOM of the base cabinet, it doesn't need it's own support shelf - it can use the bottom of the base cabinet. But if we're getting nit picky, @User's pictures were great for showing how different style cabinets may have other obstacles to installation at the absolute top or bottom of some cabinets.

So have a great day and all that.
