I think yes, get something that hangs higher and don't worry that it is not centered. I think that having an open staircase and hallway makes it look less obvious anyway.

Its centered to the door, its an entry light not a stairwell light if you will. Hanging it higher will only make it look more awkward. Getting an "entry" style light and swagging it a tad forward so it is more centered to the landing of the staircase. as a side note, that is a Kalco Tribeca with bent hand made glass, its worth about 1000$. Just an FYI .

If you hate it I would eliminate it and just put in wafer recessed light, but I think a change in the style of light, and not having something that competes with the railing would really help, perhaps glass so it falls away.

@RL Relocation LLC Thank you! I actually picked out the Kalco Tribeca but it was years ago and realized later that it does not work with the railing. But I'm struggling with what will work. What I really want is a gold Lantern style but I know that is probably not right with the modern railing either... Something like this:Thayer Lantern .

Yeah, I'd either go up close to the ceiling, like a semi-flush to just light the space, or shift it over and go long...
