Personally I think chandeliers are for over tables or in foyers so I agree with you. Along with recessed lights I think you need some lamps. You could put a floor lamp behind one of the chairs and an end table with a lamp by the sofa

I think recessed lighting is one layer of light and IMO you need 3 layers so overhead , floor lamp and table lamps a nice pice of art above the FP since the mirror reflects nothing woth seeing twice so use the spots for art .

I like your lovely room better without the chandelier. And your mirror is fine if you like it there — it nicely reflects the light in the room. I’m so sick of the very tiresome and repetitive Houzz trope about mirrors needing to reflect some spectacular view or something ”worth seeing twice”. What does that even mean? Who decides what someone else should want to see twice? What about 3+ times?

WOW. not a fan of putting what looks like an oversized entry light in the middle of this room!

I would not add recessed either, I would get to very nice brass reading floor lamps for the sofa area.

I would also look into changing out the trim on those eyeball lights you have to something less intrusive.

If you do recessed 4 would be ample.

as a side note you could also do a nice flush mount light in the center. That would be fitting to the room

I don't see any electrical outlets in this room, unless that black speck on the floor between the step and the chair on the left is one. I prefer RL's idea of a semi-flush ceiling fixture, but you do need some floor and table lamps to warm and cozy the room, even while striving for minimalism.

There's a lot of motion in that room with all the arch shapes. Adding a chandelier will make it more busy. I'm striving for minimalism and find lighting very difficult. While I appreciate layers of illumination, only you can determine how cozy the room feels. I prefer just enough light for the function of the room. My ceilings are only 8' so anything there is distracting to me, even recessed lights. I know they're functional but I like the serenity of an expanse of ceiling. In my 18 x 23 living area I have a lamp at one end and 95% of the time, that's the only light on (it's the tv room and all white). The opposite end has two recessed lights above a sideboard and one long wall has a sconce. When we have guests those lights are on. The sconce is enough if I want to read. Inconspicuous sconces aren't easy to find but for a minimalist look, it's what I prefer.

look for porcelain wall sconces they can be painted the wall color and disappear basically, a-19 makes them

TBL from CT: very helpful. We prefer space rather than end tables and lamps. The room is perfect for parties as is. We prefer space for dogs too. The spots are good for reading. I’m going w 4 recessed lights. Thank you all for all the ideas!

I am in camp to over head light fixture in a living space other than a fan possibly. Cans and lamps should provide the lighting.
