Black spray paint behind basement paneling?

last modified: 4 years ago

We are in the midst of renovating a 1967 built house. We discovered asbestos tile (2% on the tile and 4% on the black mastic) as well as 2-4% in the drywall joint compound in the kitchen where we were renovating. So we had an abatement company come in for proper removal. Upon removing the drywall, they discovered black mastic on the joist behind many pieces of drywall. We are now in the midst of removing our basement wall paneling to replace it with drywall. The abatement company did not remove the panel walls as we confirmed they were nailed on and didn’t seem to have mastic behind them. Now that we have removed all the walls we have discovered this sort of black spray paint on every other few pieces of framing. It’s very dry and clearly sprayed on as it dips over into the styrofoam insulation boards. I’m just on edge with the asbestos we did discover. Any insights or thoughts as to why this would have been done?
