Name That Plant!

who are these leaves?

These leaves are popping out of an inch-diameter, smooth barked trunk that is down in our creek bed. The plant was the victim of high water, that ripped all it's leaves and small branches off. Looks like it's trying to be a small tree. Leaves are mostly (but not entirely) lobed.

Thank you. I was going to say that couldn't be, because mulberry leaves are oval, but it turns out that very immature and early spring mulberry leaves do look exactly like this. Mulberry is kind of weird in having a slew of different leaf shapes. Thin bark with narrow ridges of mulberry fits as well.

Yes, Mulberry. The leaves are highly variable.

Yeah, the stem there that it's coming out of looks mulberry-like (slight orange tinge).

I've learned from this forum that mulberry leaves can vary a lot, but those variations still seem particular to mulberry. I just did an image search for 'mulberry seedling'.
