I think I killed my hibiscus

I moved to a bit colder climate last year and while I moved my hibiscus tree into a partially closed garage ( in the back away from the door-garage door was on back order.) it lost all it's leaves while in there. we had a warm snap a couple weeks ago and placed it just outside the door to get some partial sun, then a few days later we had a cold snap and forgot we had placed it outside. now the branches are for certain brittle at least 4 inches down but I hate to keep breaking them to check for greener branches, just wondered if there was something viable in the thicker braided trunk of the hibiscus. I was told it was a cold hardy hibiscus and I could actually plant it in the ground and had planned to do that in the fall. But now it seems it didn't even weather the garage away from the entrance. how would I know if it was still alive? My heart is broken as this was given to me for my first anniversary by my late husband. I"m just sickened by the possibility that i have killed it.
