I am glad things are going good in your new home, Julia. I hope you really enjoy it, should be fun creating a new space. I am looking forward to hearing from the more southerly gardeners as they find scapes, and flowers of course! I have 2 new daylilies that should arrive soon, Bragging Rights and Irish Mayhem. Not sure where I will get them planted!

Nice to hear things are going well for you, Julia! it sounds ilke your weather is similar to what we have been experiencing. I’m guessing more 40’s than you have had. I’m seeing daylily foliage here, cant wait til it gets warmer. I also hope we see blooms from Kay and Kate soon.

It's good to hear from you Julia. Was your winter weather in W.Va much different then what you were used to?.........I'd Love to have a garden shed for plants and a place to plant more flowering trees ( I really miss my Crab Apple in spring). Have fun looking around..............My daylily pots are springing to life, but unlike in ground daylilies, that means I have to start repotting them ASAP. Groan! That's if the weather will EVER cooperate. Going back down into the 30's Friday night, with more storms coming our way next week....................Maryl

Oh, weather is same here. I just got a couple of areas close to the house weeded, then it started raining. Colder today, Friday and Saturday nights down to 33 and 31. Every time I turn the TV on it drops a degree. Now predicting snow! It won't stick of course, but really! There should be a law against snow this time of year, LOL! I really am ready for spring.

I hope the ones I sent you in the fall are the potted ones that are alive. My daylilies are all up and growing like crazy, but, like the others, our weather keeps swinging between freezing and the high 70s. I'm not looking forward to another freeze at the end of this week.

Nancy: I'll gladly co-author a bill forbidding freezing temperatures after April 1st. The wind was howling today, and won't let up until this system passes through. I had to put on my "puffy" coat today as the chill in the air sliced right through me. Down with cold weather, up with warm weather (and rain at night not during the day when we need to be out working in the garden)!...............Maryl

Maryl, it was 50 here, sun was shining quite a bit of time. Could have been a nice day, but for that wind! As you say, the chill cut right into you. Totally agree about rain only at night.

I want to think that people down south have perfect springs where no late frosts/freezes occur. That way when I move there, I can enjoy gardening bliss. Daylilies have been emerging for a couple weeks here but then the deer come by for some natural pruning. It never seems to bother them as they just keep on pushing new growth and they seem plenty vigorous to me as the season progresses. I feel like they are just snacking on what will become frost damage anyway. I've begun spraying deer fence early this year so they don't learn to come here for a snack later and to protect my Japanese Maples and conifers, but they've never really snacked on them before (except for the random sample) and I don't want them to start. But with all the rain it feels like a losing battle.

Maryl: I think our winter here in WV was much better than what we typically experienced in NYS. My sister who lives across the road from our old home in NYS was on snow overload and the winds didn't help with the snow drifting. We had one storm here in WV which gave us about 6 inches and within a few days it was all gone. Second storm was 4 inches but within a day, it was all gone. Of course we had those pesky flurries which lasts about 10 minutes.

I did forget to mention Kate who does post at the same time as Kay. So Kate, I hope the cirtters stay away. I'm seeing how the Bobbex and milorganite do. I see tracks along the edge of the front bed. But with this constant on and off rain, I'l be continuing to put it down just to stay ahead this year. I was so devasted last year when they ate all the flowers and buds off the daylllies and nipped a few on the other plantings.

When you all mentioned the freeze this weekend I had to go and look to see if we were going to be affected but will only go to the mid 30's. All next week we will be in the 70's/60's.

Our cat Marmalade aka Marley, is experiencing more eyesight issues. I guess old age does affect even our precious fur buddies. she seemed to be doing so much better but then over the past month we've noticed a decline again but still gets around pretty good.

It has been an unusual spring here. I have three plants with scape but their buds are still tight., We are hopefully in the last chill of the year...if we get past a frost tonight, it should be smooth sailing although since the daylilies always think it is time to grow, they have already received a couple of harsh reality checks which resulted in some set backs. The snow ball bbushes (trees) are incredible. I have never seen so many blooms. pictures do not do justice to them. Azaleas and dutch iris are blooming too and the Daffodils are through but were lovely this year, Sping is always such a pretty time. Julia, I am glad the weather has been more decent for you and that you and your spouse are settling in to the new house.

Julia: I'm so sorry to hear of Marmalade's eye trouble. It is remarkable how well they adjust to changing circumstances and you know I send kisses hugs and good wishes your way............ I watch a site in Canada that rescues feral cats and not so feral cats (Called Tiny Kittens). They have some amazing stories of physically challenged cats that have survived and thrived. One of my favorites was the rescue and rehab of Thor and Nyla from the wild. Thor had to have both his eyes removed and Nyla had one removed. They bonded together and have a loving forever home now. There is always hope.........Maryl

I am sorry about Marmalade, but it sounds good that she is getting around pretty good. They do adapt.
