help with hood design

Below is a rendering of our kitchen design and I'm struggling with what to do with our hood situation. The wall where the hood is not too wide and we had originally wanted shelves flanking the hood but it looked dinky so we landed with expanding the hood which we hope to create a plaster look or use Roman clay paint.

My question is should I leave as is on the rendering with a possible pot pan bar beneath to hang wooden spoons, copper pans, etc.

Or create a hood that comes down similar to the photo below?

It's the first think you see when you come into the home along with the island so we would like it to look nice.

The second photo is an absolute no. You are cutting off your landing space with those "legs" to the counter, and they will be a cleaning nightmare.

The first photo looks good to me. The whole point of the "plaster look" hood is clean lines and simplicity. If you want to gewgaw it with a rod of dangling pans and spatulas, then you don't really want a plaster-look hood. What you want is a stainless steel hood with a bar like you mentioned. Though I detest those bars, who wants dangling utensils and pans over the range. They will all have to be cleaned periodically of the cooking splatter, besides being a busy look.

Sometimes people cannot stop adding "stuff" to their design; the idea of empty space is a problem for them. But it is empty space that is most restful aesthetic.

I agree with Roy. Simple design, like the first one with NOTHING below it.

I'd definitely go with the rendering, especially if you have a beautiful stone like is shown. And you may end up with a crock of wooden spoons, S&P shakers etc beside the cooktop so you don't want to build in too much stuff. I really like your design! We are planning to use Portola paint on our hood too for a plaster look.

Thanks everyone for the input . Seems as though the rendering with no bar is the best. I was just thinking of what would be the most functional and liked the idea of having some spoons as maybe a dish rag hanging near the sink and easily accessible but we can live with the space first to see if it's needed.

Another questjon- should I opt for a sconce or small flush mount above the sink?

No bar for sure and the top one if you must go with a plastered hood IMO a really good quaity stainless hood is always my choice since both wood and plastered hoods discolor over time and also get greasey no matter how gret the hood so much easier to clena a stainless hood.

I agree that it is nice to have spoons/spatulas near the range, and a dishrag near the sink. But above the range is the wrong place for it. For spoons, consider a nice countertop crock as stiley suggested. Or if you just need a few items, some hooks or a hanging rail on the backsplash. Put your dishrag on a small hook or rail on the other side of the sink, where the cabinets above make it less conspicuous. Or consider something like the Kohler utility rack inside your sink.

We well designed brand new kitchen should have easily accessible drawers for storing all of your pots and pans and spoons. I don't really understand the rag question.

But in the long run, is your concern that you wanted more of a decorative look on either side of your hood that you are now not getting from the shelving? That seems like a legit concern. I'm not a fan of modern, so I'm not the right one to judge whether the hood looks too bulky and sparse. But is that somewhat your concern?

Maybe you could wrap the bottom of the hood with a piece of wood trim that matches your island?

I don't think sconce vs flush mount over the sink matters as much as finding the right piece. The lights over your sink are beautiful pieces, but I actually think you could find better ones for the space, especially now knowing that this is the first thing you see when you walk in the door.

Yes we are planning to have pull outs for spoons and island will have pots. The rack was really meant to be more decorative to house the prettier wooden spoons and rags (to be near the sink). We like the hood as is but was just wanting to make sure we weren't missing a chance to further elevate the space.

We are going for a transitional space, so not too modern and not too traditional. Perimeters will be narrow shaker in a taupe color and the island will be a dark stained oak. Uppers will have a brass mesh and hardware will be brass.

Sounds beautiful! Hope your remodel goes smoothly.

Be careful about too many elements in one room as a way to “elevate” the design. Good design is cohesive and edited. Remember CocoChanel’s advice - remove one piece of jewelry before you leave the house. I think you’re adding a lot of different elements.

Where is the brass mesh in the upper cabinets - in the middle instead of plain glass? Do you have a photo of it?

We only have 2 uppers to the very right and those will have brass mesh. We have some tall cabinets on another wall but those will all be a shaker detail

This is a side view. The 2 uppers on the left will have brass mesh that will house rates plates and glassware and the rest will be the shaker detail. The pantry door at the end and island will be v- groove

We have a very similar design and I love it!

Adriane- love that countertop and backsplash material you have on the perimeter . May I ask what material it is? I still have to make a decision on our countertop/backsplash.

Thank you! It’s Carrara marble in the perimeter and backsplash. The island is Fresh Concrete quartz

Adrianne- love your hood too . May I ask how the Carrara has held up? It's a toss up between marble and porcelain for us.

So far, so good! I bought a bunch of clear marble protective cutting boards and have them strategically placed in high use areas :)
