For four inch limbs you’ll need a saw. The strongest loppers won’t do much more than about two.

I have a pair of huge ratcheting loppers but they spread so wide to open that they are too awkward to maneuver up in trees.

I have an electric pole chain saw that works for that if climbing and using a hand saw is impossible.

Be sure to get one with the motor on the handle end- those with the motor on the business end are unwieldy.

I vote for the chain saw on a pole. While you are purchasing it with the idea of reaching high branches, it can also be used for general trimming.

Being on a pole, it make it easy to get into thick bushes like cypress, cedars, etc. It can also be used on sprawling other plants.

With the long pole, you can reach into the bush, and avoid coming in contact with sharp needles, thorns, etc.

They make electric chainsaw blades on extendable poles -- brother has one.

This chainsaw looks reasonably well-powered at 8 amps, but it only extends to 15 feet. Is there a brand of telescoping chainsaw that is known for longer telescoping?
