Beheaded peony, will it recover?

I planted a bare root Monsieur Jules Elie peony in fall 2020. It didn't bloom in 2021, but this year it had a flower bud. TRAGICALLY, last night an animal chopped off everything, leaving only stalks. Obviously this year is over for it, but will it it ever recover or is it dead forever? It has no leaves left. I am so upset.

Sorry that happened but I bet next year it will be great. I’d maybe give it a bit of fertilizer but I’m sure it will be fine

its still green so its not dead ...

be patient.. and hope for the best ..

protect it now ...

it looks like what rabbits do in my yard.... snip stuff off.. and then walk away and not even eat it.. or should i say.. hop away ...

ps: before it started spring growth.. were the eyes more or less at soil surface??? .. if not.. i wonder if you planted it too deep ....

Give it protection, a wire mesh ring fastened to a stake. Make it large enough to enclose the whole plant as it puts on size, and make it tall enough that it will keep critters out. Then just wait. It may be set back a bit, but I doubt it is dead.
