Oursteelers, thanks. I have trying to keep a lower profile this year because I know my garden starts crazy early. Today is Easter, and I felt like I had to share the joys of renewal and new beginnings.

I took pics this evening..our temperatures aren't warm..but it LOOKS as if winter is over!..my backyard in 4 pics left to right..

my pots are still in the garage since a few days ago..didn't cover anything outside..I dropped some leaves on Fire Island..I hate the thought of all of my new growth out in the cold..but it's impossible to cover so much..

Your gardens look so good. Yesterday I picked the hosta leaves that were burned/melted by the last frost off. Only 6 plants had spotty damage. We also have some cool nights coming up this week and then day temps in the 80's.

Wow look at all of you with hostas already. I just have these pips coming up today on my fire island. North of Chicago.

Frost warning for here tonight. Wish my plants luck, as they are on their own. I cannot cover and move that many.

I wish them luck. Hopefully it is a light frost if any. Snowing here. I will likely get 4" or more. No pips so no foul but the Crocus & Primula will not be too happy.

What is the variegated leafed shrub? perennial? on the left of the hosta in the first picture in the post that starts Mourning dove with gemstone? I have a variegated addiction...

FL, that’s variegated daphne. I love it, and its late winter flowers smell like Fruit Loops.

Everything looks Ok. It got down to 34 degrees F (about 1 C). Phew. Sunset Grooves with Elegans, Dancing Queen, Dream Queen, and Invincible.

Fire Island 💕..

do I need to fertilize these?..my inground hosta look good..they get top dressed with compost..I've never fertilized them..Diamond Lake was light deprived in the shed and my garage..it's outside now but the color is weak and the leaves are droopy..it's not dry..it's been out in the rain..I have some organic granular 10-10-10 fertilizer..should I use it on my pots?..

Utog, did you mean it takes seasons for Diamond Lake to get good coloring or later this season? That one is new to me and was slow to emerge so I’m also curious about it

Usually I only fertilize the roses, sometimes the clematis but this year I felt bad and almost everybody got a handful-even the hosta, hydrangeas and daylilies.

Oh and the containers-normally I only fertilize annuals but this year even the potted hosta got a snack. It will be interesting to see if everyone does the same or has a growth

the leaf litter and my compost have kept my outside plants healthy..

but a mild organic fertilizer for the pots sounds reasonable..

and why not a little for some of outside plants too?..

NW, I don’t fertilize my potted hostas, by I have only been growing them 4-5 years. I repotted (down-sized) several this use, so I probably should have been more mindful of soil fatigue and have fertilized them every 1-2 years.
Diamond Lake gains its color in the first few weeks after unfurling. It is a big plant, a fast grower that probably depletes the nutrients from potting soil quickly. I gave my MIL my Diamond Lake 2 weeks ago because it needed to go in the ground. It is something of an early riser here, prone to spring frost damage. I could baby it now by toting the pot in and out of the crawl space with every spring frost while it is small, but not when it gets big. So, it has a new home in the ground in Hosta-Utopia at my MIL’s place.

utog..I haven't had many hosta in pots..some were planted outside after a season or two..(I'd change my mind and want a different one in the pot)..until Diamond Lake my potted hosta had good color..I'm hoping with some fertilizer, natural light and rain Diamond Lake will look pretty again..

I'm having coffee too!..yesterday was beautiful..sunny and 80's but no gardening for me..my great niece had her Covid delayed wedding reception..she had a very small Zoom wedding a year ago..basically I got up got ready and was gone all day..I went early to help..so happy for her..she finally had a day where she felt like a bride..

Very much enjoying the stroll through hosta gardens. I love hostas but don't have many as the voles seem to love them more than me. I have two that seem to survive. Can anyone identify them?

I was told this was Paul's Glory but it doesn't look like images I see.

This one used to get huge when I had it in the ground but I had to move it due to some landscaping changes. Once I moved it, the voles found it so I put it in a pot last year to try to rescue it. It seems to be coming back well. No idea what it is.

NW, looking better. I never wait for rain, as the forecast is often wrong. Your DL may benefit from a few weeks of masking tape to support the stems until the plant strengthens.

@peren.all Zone 5a Ontario Canada that could be it. It's been so long since it's been healthy enough to flower, I'll be interested to see if it has flowers this year and looks like Winter Snow's. Thanks!

You are most welcome! I am sure others will chime in but those beautiful long twisted leaf tips and leaf colour are very indicative of WS. Please let us know if it flowers and you confirm its identity.

utog..I watered it..I cut strips of a tshirt rag..was going to tie up the stems with a forked stick for support (done this before)..but the leaves are heavy..the stems have a natural arc and if i lift them higher I think they would crease..decided to let nature take it's course..
