A singular event: I planted a rose

I've gone from about 150 roses to about 3 dozen (I counted). Mostly it has been because of drought, but wanting less garden work was also part of it. I'm actually not working any less in my garden these days, but it looks better for my efforts, which is very rewarding. The front garden is still full of tradional flowes and roses, and the back fence has roses climbing each panel of a long section. Other than that, the back garden is California natives and fruit trees.

I do still love my roses though.

Sometime in the past couple of years I bought 'Nearly Wild' from Annie's Annuals and planted it in the front garden. It is doing well, so far staying smallish, which I actually want it to do. A few months ago Vintage had a rose sale and I was fortunate enough to get "Schmidt's Smooth Yellow" which comes from Jackie's wonderful heirloom garden. I kept it in a larger pot for a while, and today I planted it, Here it is:

It is looking a little yellowish, possibly weather? but I added some fertilizer and I think it will do well. The soil there is very nice. Behind it left to right are 'Lamarque', Hibiscus syriacus 'Diana', and 'Climbing Lady Hillingdon'; and next layer down, some fading paperwhite narcissicus, peony 'Festiva Maxima' and Salvia nemerosa 'Carradonna'; at the base, sedum 'Dr. John Creech'. Everything there is white, yellow, or in the case of the salvia, deep blue-purple. I don't always plan my colors so carefully as this, but I expect to be very pleased with this little corner.

Thanks, Rosefolly. Yes, after I followed Kim's instructions to put a cage around the stump and cover the cage with a white cotton sheet, and keep the sheet wet 100% of the time (as well as watering the rose frequently), my AO started to sprout new growth all over, and now is a nice round bush. I am waiting happily for it to start putting out new climbing canes, so I can train them over the arch AO is planted next to. Below are before and after pics:

Congratulations on your new rose, and I hope you get many hours and years of pleasure from it. Roses are satisfyingly long lived.

Glad you got a SSY, Rosefolly. I transplanted one of the ones I had growing in my garden into our "new" garden, which is protected by a deer fence. We had amended the soil a LOT after we had the huge old bushes removed, so I did not put any other soil into the hole when we planted SSY. Well, from the way it drained I could tell that the soil there (as opposed to where I had planted some other roses nearby) was still very much more clayish. It did drain, but way more slowly than other places. SSY immediately turned yellow, and I was worried about it. I watered it well about once a week, and it just sat there. After about 2 months, it has finally started putting out new growth, and I think will make it. The only advice I have for yours is WATER, WATER, WATER, as long as it is draining OK. I would not feed it anymore until you see new growth.

Your color combination sounds lovely - can't wait to see it when everything is in bloom.

Thank you, Jackie. I have thought a lot about your garden with all the changes you have recenlty had to make.

By the way, I also wanted to tell you that Anna Olivier has made a wonderful comeback, new growth and a nice flush of bloom this spring. My fingers are crossed that yours does just as well.

@Rosefolly z5 Thank you for sharing pics of your lovely garden corner and your newly planted SSY! I am so glad it is growing in your garden as well as Jackie’s. I would love to see updates as it matures in your yellow, white and blue bed. I am impressed by the ways you, Jackie and other gardeners in CA are working hard to adjust to climate change! Your area of the country is disproportionately hit, but you all inspire me with your fortitude and creativity. Carol
