last modified: 4 years ago

Hello houzz people

i am doing major renovation and this is our family room at the rear of house

i am thinking of replacing this 40 year old window as its very old? and to imrpove the look

how can I make it better?

i am building addition above this family room

and baseboards are removed

i could extend window all the way to floor

i am thinking black window looks sleek

but cant decide on the designs of window

should I extend windows all the way to floor? or leave as it is and replace to new window? any idea?

thanks:)

I do not have enough info to really comment. I would probably not keep the slanted top pieces at all then just do sliders if you have somewhere you are wanting to access the outdoors and I see one set of sliders but I have no idea what is out that side of the house so maybe a pic of the exterior would help. IMO since this is not a sunroom but your FR you need to share a bit aboiut your style and IMO all windows should match in color in a home so no black here unless all the windows will be changed.

You mentioned black windows. What color are the rest of your windows? These should be same color as the others. I love the windows you already have, do they really need replacing?

I am adding addition on 2nd floor and those windows will be black facing backyard this family room will be matching with that but the rest of house for front and side is white but down the road i will probably change to black would it be strange to have for now those windows facing back as black and the ones facing frontyard as white??

Where will the 2nd story be placed? Those frame lineals on the glass are "structural" to the support of that assembly and you cannot remove them or deviate from the existing shape/orientation of the windows. You could not put in sliders unless you are referring to vertical sliders (i.e. double hungs).

Was just going to type the same as above. That sunroom was a kit from someone.

This looks like an addition. It might not support a second floor as built.

No "might" about it. Not rated for any load bearing...at all.

    @Windows on Washington Ltd

so these windows are load bearing? or not?

They are not designed to bear any more weight than the roof windows that are resting atop them. Have you selected a contractor yet for the addition? This should be something that they will address in their expansion plans. The short answer is "NO". That frame is designed to support ONLY the weight of those roof window panels. Nothing more.

@So its ok to replace them if they are not load beating?

    yes i have GC now

if the top room is being built, then have the 'sunroom' included into the plans. You need the structure to support the room above.

Who has drawn up plans for this and why wasn't the first story included? obviously it's not going to support anything as is.

but if all you want are ideas for the window, why not do a bifold door across the span? not cheap, but it would be nice for a walk out patio.

    or sliders

or do a couple of french doors and tall windows

these windows are sitting /resting on this beam which will be replace with LVL as it will support 2nd floor r and windows are not load bearing. how can I do sliding windows here? that means I loose sunroom?
