Conifer for a suburban home

last modified: 4 years ago

The rear corner of my back yard needs a medium sized tree or shrub. I'm thinking of a conifer. Originally there was a large round pine tree there, but the side facing east was shaded by a large zelcova tree and developed a lot of dead needles on that side.

We have the tree thinned regularly now but very little morning sun gets through after the tree leafs out in spring. About 2 PM, that corner goes into full sun for the rest of the day. Deciduous shrubs I've tried have had leaf burn. Is there a conifer that might do well here? I thought if it had an open structure instead of a dense one like the pine tree that used to be in that corner, sparse growth or dieback on the side facing the tree wouldn't be as noticeable.

I'm in the Portland area, zone 8.
