Is Anyone Growing "Over the Edge" Floribunda (JACmootono)?

The photos on the Jackson & Perkins website look intriguing...

I had not heard of it, so I went to HMF.

The first comment, after mentioning its BS susceptibility, contained some bad news:

“However, it survived near-constant attacks by spotted lanternfly nymphs, which loved its new shoots.”

    !!

That doesn't sound good at all. And what are spotted lanternfly nymphs?

See ”Life cycle” for description and photo. I don’t think there’s any worry yet for California. Several sightings of adults last summer and early fall here by me in NJ. I knew nothing about their taste for roses until tonight. I wonder if it’s ”just” the nymphs. Tree of heaven grows all around here.

Now: back to discussion of this beautiful rose JACmootono!

    Deborah,

I was interested in this one too. A picotee edge with a strong fragrance makes it quite unique. I think you should ’take one for the team’ and try it out! The reviews on HMF seem good, and J&P is offering 25% off.

I have one and it is currently working on its first flush. It’s new bare root this year and it was very late to break dormancy so we’ll see how it fares.

Review from somebody who grew it as a test rose last year said it did BS for them as well on the east coast, and the fragrance was mild until the fall flush when it got stronger, so I may have to wait to see how it truly does.

Paul Zimmerman help with the release on this one. He was pretty excited about it. I will let J&P get better at sending out good roses before I even think about getting it.

J&P and its sister companies, Wayside Gardens, and Park Seed haven't been able to ship to Idaho for years, and they won't tell me why. There is something "off" about that, so I frankly don't want their roses. I can get seed from Park Seed, I think, but no plants. Diane

I was just thinking I should buy this one (taking one for the team, Ben), but Diane's comment gave me pause. I wouldn't want to introduce some nasty disease or bug into my garden...I have enough to deal with -- gophers, deer, ground squirrels, rabbits, moles, etc. Though I did order a shrub from them that came in a 2 qt container a couple of weeks ago...argh. Hope I didn't make a big mistake! I wonder why they can't ship to Idaho??

They wouldn't tell me, but said I should check with the county agricultural office or extension office. I can't remember exactly, but I knew they knew the reason why they couldn't ship here. They just didn't want to admit what the reasons were. Edmunds can't ship here, either. California is usually so strict that I'm surprised J&P can send you plants. I'm sure your shrub is fine, though. That’s strange Diane…so other places ( like Regan) are allowed to ship to Idaho? I thought most of the big retailers get their roses from 4 main sources (Weeks, Certified, Star, Austin) so not sure what difference it’d make. I can’t think of a large retailer that’s budding/grafting and field growing their own roses in the US.

    Deborah,

I wouldn’t think this rose would be any additional risk since it probably has the same origins as some of your others…in this case I bet Weeks is growing it in Wasco.

Is Star even a minor rose grower these days?

The labels on the rose containers at a HD near me changed some time ago.

To be clear, I’m not saying that those roses are grown in different soil now.

Ben, I can get roses from Palatine, Hortico, Antique Rose Emporium, Austin, and probably Regan, and some others. I haven't checked all of them. I'm not sure about Brecks. I don't understand it, either. I probably should pursue my questions with the county agent's office to start. There are other states that have had shipping restrictions in the last few years, and all have been in the West. Diane

It was my first time ordering from J&P directly. I love a couple of their roses but I bought them from other vendors. My shipment came from South Carolina and it spent 7 days on a UPS truck during a very warm February here in SoCal.

The bare roots had a lot of growth already and I don’t always like them expending that energy while on a hot UPS truck. Both my “Over the Edge” and “Like no Other” were the slowest to break dormancy and I was worried they wouldn’t make it—I actually emailed J&P and they advised me to water with Epsom salts 🤷‍♂️

So maybe Diane you’re better off anyway.

Speaking of shipping restrictions LongAgoRoses doesn’t ship to most states west of the Mississippi and I’d love to get some older Austin’s that I just smelled at the Huntington but guess I’ll have to find another vendor.

It looks beautiful in your yard, Nick. Did it have decent substance, and was it long lasting?

DDinSB (Z10b Coastal CA) thanked BenT (NorCal 9B Sunset 14)

Ben, I’m not sure what you mean by substance, but the blooms lasted a decent amount of time on the bush. I almost never cut roses to bring the house, so I can’t speak to vase life. They didn’t seem to shattered very quickly though. The bush stayed around 2.5’x3’ all last season, and it’s a similar size now. It’s just starting to bloom and the fragrance reminds me of Bathsheba- a medium to strong honey myrrh. I get zero fruit like the J&P description states. It produces more single blooms than clusters as you can see by the bush shots.

    From today:

Thank Nick! By substance I was trying to determine if the petals were thick and stiff (as opposed thin, soft and wimpy).

Ben, after feeling them I’d say medium to thick petals. Significantly more than an Austin, about the same or slightly less than Perfume Factory. *I think I remember you having that one.

Resurrecting this thread for a moment: @Nick 10bSW17 how’s Over the Edge doing for you? Any updates?

@BenT (NorCal 9B Sunset 14) did you end up growing this?

Thanks! It’s on sale at J&P and I think it looks like an interesting one…

I got rid if mine, I didn’t find it super special, lots if rust in SF and I was sick of pulling leaves. Even if I had a larger yard, I wouldn’t get it again.

I'm a little late to this party but I do want chime in.

My Over the Edge was super awesome in a three gallon pot for the first year, a bloom machine, no disease beautiful as beautiful can be but things changed from the second year on. Thrips got everything, at some point I thought it's gonna die. I sized it up to five gal pot in the third year, it survived and gave me two blooms. This year it only have one healthy cane left and started to bud out. I don't know if it's going to keep living. I am frustrated and quite sad. After reading these comments here, I am ready to let go if it continue to be a low performer 😔.

@C L @Nick 10bSW17 Thank you both for your response, I’m definitely going to hold off as I barely have more space.
