No. Watch them, they tell you when it is time. I use granular and put it down in late fall and early spring. When growing is fast (June - August) I add more every month. Maybe 5-6 times a year.

I tend to fertilize a bit every time. I use a variety of teas and ferments, and a dipper or scoop of something is usually added to the watering cans. I'm of the camp of just keeping the soil fertile so plants don't have to ask to be fed. I also tend to amend my containers with compost at least once a year depending on how I'm using the container. Like my tomatoes will get a good couple scoops mixed in before planting, but my spring greens might get more of a top-dressing in the fall prior.

Right now I'm using leaf mold tea on my containers- because I happen to have a tank of ready and handy. Now it's just spring greens and herbs, but by the time I'm ready to plant in other stuff, the containers will have already been gently fed for a while.

For MiracleGro, the "indoor" dilution is appropriate to watering with it all the time. What counts is the concentration of the fertilizer. To much is worse than too little. For soil that is properly amended with organics, they'll be fed constantly, though at a low rate, as the organics decompose. Plant compost is more a survival fertilizer than an optimal growth fertilizer. It's main purpose is soil structure. You'd be wise to add something stronger. Manure compost is better.

If we are talking containers, then yes, I fertilize with every watering in season. A good container soil rarely contains sufficient nutrients (if any) to get a plant to maturity and productivity without supplemental fertilization and the need for such frequent watering - daily in some cases - means those nutes are leached out with every watering and need to be replaced.

And FWIW, granular ferts in containers are not nearly as efficient or effective as a full service water soluble product....like Miracle Gro or Dyna Gro. And organics are pretty useless.

But this is for container gardening only. Inground gardening requires a different approach.
