Help with finding a carpet design

last modified: 4 years ago

We recently renovated a 20yr old house ourselves, and took parents' used black leather sofas. Looked through a few different carpet options but none seem to go well with the warm floor colour vs the cold white/grey/black walls and sofa.
We're waiting for LED ceiling light to come. Once installed, it would be right on top of the middle space between the two sofas.
Any tips on the colour/size of the carpet would be appreciated <3

    Photo please, and room measurements.

Whatever rug you select make sure it is large enough that at least the front legs of furniture are on it. Furniture all the way on is also a good choice if you want to cover most of the floor. Consider visiting a broadloom retailer who will cut and serge a custom size rug for you. I've had great luck finding discounted high-end broadloom remnants.

The floor is very nice. Are you going to add floor or table lamps? It will make the room more welcoming.

Agree with ^^ P Banos, it can be helpful to use painters tape to lay out different rug sizes to see what works best - you may need custom bc of the room size/shape (cut-to-size broadloom is a great option for that)

are you planning on keeping this room more neutral or would you like to add some color in there. If color, what colors do you love or have in other parts of the house?

@P Banos @la_la Girl we have a floor lamp in the corner now, maybe we'll add a coffee table lamp in the future. We'll check out local rug stores for the cost of custom sizes. Would you say it's better to have all sofa legs on it, only the front legs, or none?

@cubby14 neutral colors would be great. Our entire house is painted white, with that grey fireplace feature wall and grey kitchen cabinets. (We're not designers so we went with the safest choices from store advisors)

Below is the measurement of the fireplace feature wall, 12'8, and the distance from wall to stairs is 10'.

9 X 12 is a standard size for area rugs. Check out a flooring retailer if there is one close to you. The one I frequent has area rugs, remnants bound in standard sizes and a large amount of in stock and special order carpeting that can be cut to any size. Then they bind the edges and you have a custom area rug. There is also an abundance of choices available from online retailers and furniture stores.

Looks like 8x10 would be your 'standard' size. Or you could nearly fill the room with a custom size that went wall to wall lengthwise and as wide as possible. Larger rug is quieter in a high ceiling room.

Thanks, any tips on the color/pattern of the rugs?

Your sofas don't appear to be "up" on legs but are hugging the floor. I think slipping the rug under the front 1/3 - 1/2 of the sofa will look more grounded. What are the recesses for? Is TV to go in one of them? I actually think I'd put a conversation area with the two sofas in the left corner where the floor vent is. Then group four swivel chairs out in the center of the room.

Option for multi-color, and much warm to blend with floor. Maybe table[s] could have pewter/black metal or wood to pair with sofas.

Yo lots of color, but with a clear coffee table? - see their display with black sofa - huge abstract canvas art over fp could have a couple matching/ blending colors from any rug you go with. I like that the 'pattern' is huge, similar to windows/niche.

@decoenthusiaste the sofas are only about an inch off the floor. The recesses are for smaller TVs in 1990s, so we'll probably just put in some decors or shelve it. I tried to put one sofa against the left wall, and there's no space to put the other one (it would be blocking fireplace). Not sure if this is what you meant:

@everdebz the white/grey wall paint have blue underlying tone which are cooler than what it looks like in the picture. But that's a great advice to pick warmer lighting and a coffee table that matches sofas :)

Great suggestions from everyone! I discussed with my husband and we narrowed down to 2 choices from Costco, what do you think of each pick? Both have light beige color which we think would go with the floor, and grey to match the wall.

Confused - are you keeping the black loveseat/ sofas? If you want, post photo of the LED chandelier.

@everdebz yes, we're keeping both sofas. For ceiling light we're planning to get this:

I like the diamonds much better than the patchwork in your space.

You posted sofa by the opening - what about a long table under it, with table lamp or two? could brighten the shared wall, and decorate too.

Nice that the light is 'full' and tall. With some traditional elements in the room/ ceiling, I think a rug with some element of traditional, whether 'enlarged' damask, could suit...?

Or a large, noticeable pattern ---

The lovely arched elements could have a repeat if you want, like this rug's soft pattern. Also a shag is casual like the sofa.... ?

I agree with cawaps about liking diamond-type rather than patchwork - too casual for architecture of the room.

Unfortunately, those rugs look like Costco/ Walmart rugs.

If price is an issue you'd be better off looking at HomeGoods and scoring a better carpet at a good price.
