I bought an ebb tide grafted rose from Hirts. It arrived about a month ago in terrible shape. It had only one green cane. Which would be more accurately stated as it had one cane that wasn't obviously dead. Hirts gave me a full refund. No problem. So I'm OK with them.

I thought I would leave it in the ground and see what happens. Have nothing to lose. I didn't see anything from the not clearly dead cane, but yesterday I notice a couple of new canes emerging rom the ground. I always bury the graft a few inches, so I can't clearly see where the growth is coming from. But it's only coming from near the not dead cane. I tried to delicately dig around the canes to see where they came from, but I couldn't make it all the way to the graft without risking catastrophic damage to the tender herbaceous growth. here's a picture...

So, what do you think? Do you think the growth is coming from ebb tide or the root stock? Which I assume is Dr Huey or maybe multiflora.

Obviously I can wait for a bloom, but rootstock blooms on old growth, so I would have to wait for a year if it's rootstock. Any obvious indicators outside or purple blooms that I should look for?
