I have the same project!..15 years ago my brother-in-law created beds at his new house..he used landscape fabric..UGH!..

now my sister wants to change the landscaping and said "come and get any of these plants you want"..so I went yesterday and dug up Plantaginea and some sedum..the hosta look sad..tangled in landscape fabric with fairy rings..but I bagged them up and brought them home..I think what you're doing sounds like what I need to do..and in my case I'll be removing landscape fabric too..

this hosta is the only one that looked decent..

their elderly cat was put to sleep..my brother-in-law scattered new kitty litter in the bed..see it in pic#2?..my sister said it's like sawdust..I'll probably shake that off..I'm going to plant all of these in an out of the way corner that's next to my neighbor's weed patch..it has a little sun so maybe these hosta can improve..

Nice - both of you. It depends on what you want and how quickly you want a big Hosta. The three plants won't form a single crown, but it will look like it. Although, sometimes Hosta decide to grow in weird directions so it may look askew in a few years . . . or not. But why am I telling you this, I think you already know.

Will the three pieces planted so close together will eventually form one crown?

they wont fuse together to MAKE one crown.. but to your eye.. it will appear to be one plant ... and it wont take all that long ...
