I'm a little confused by your pictures because the first picture is not charcoal window trim, the actual windows panes are black instead of the usual white and the window trim is what looks to be an off-white or gray color. Also, they used black for whatever reason as the gutters which comes down on the corners of the house and look really bad.

I like the trim color on the "current color" photo. I don't know if that's a picture of your actual house but I think the front door looks fine. You could paint it but I wouldn't go as dark as charcoal. A nice gray-green would be pretty. Sherwin Williams "retreat" color could give it a bit of a modern refresh.
