Can't tell how wide your sidewalk is where it connects to the driveway, but guessing it's 3'. People will take a shortcut across your lawn from the driveway. That problem is, no doubt, why Dig Doug expanded the area to at least double its current width. Either you make the approach to the entry large enough that people aren't tempted to cheat, or you add a barrier that forces them to comply.

Keep whatever shrubs and trees you already have, unless they are diseased or will cause problems with the foundation or utilities. I recommend you visit local nurseries (not big box stores) and talk to staff about which plants do best in your soil and climate. You can also drive around and see what people have in their yards. Gardeners are often happy to tell you about their plantings. When looking for new shrubs, pay attention to their expected mature heights and widths. Dwarf only means smaller than the species, so dwarf shrubs can still be quite tall. If a shrub is expected to eventually get 4' wide, do not plant it closer than 2' to a wall, fence, border or pathway. Every new plant is going to be small, so be careful not to over plant. It's better to fill in between with annuals for the first several years. You can also fill in between perennials with spring bulbs for early color. Fading bulb foliage will be hidden by new perennial foliage as it breaks dormancy.

Beds should be a minimum of 3' deep for perennials, 4' is better for shrubs, but 5' is about the deepest they should be made, as you can't easily reach the back of the bed. Beds do not need to be symmetrical to be balanced. I would place a single arching shrub below the picture window. Add perennials in front and to the side of shrubs and a low edging plant in front of all.

Can you step back and get a pic from further away and while the sun is behind you? Your house looks really cute. I would want to direct water from the downspout away from the front walk, somehow.
