A question about companion plants for my hosta beds.

I have tried numerous times to get Hakonechloa (Japanese Forest Grass) going in my beds, but to no avail. My last surviving plant showed up this spring but only has about 8-10 blades. It is kind of pricey, so if I try again I'd like to stack the odds in my favor.

Does it want total shade? Is one color hardier than the other? Does it want or need to be fertilized with something specific? Maybe it is too humid or hot here in Georgia?

Would love any tips or suggestions :)
