Bev2009's post about her cutting mistake made me think about all the mistakes I've made on my quilting journey. This was one of the most devestating. I had cut all the "logs" for this quilt before I realized that I had cut them all wrong. I was crushed because I had used all of the scraps I had intended to use, and I had no more of the colors I needed. After studying the directions more carefully, I realized that if I reduced the size of the little black triangle that the log cabins were built around and trimmed every one of the 720 "logs" I had cut, I cound make an acceptable block. Here is the result - one of my favorite quilts.

Valerie, the pattern is called "Winter Snow," and it's from a book by Sara Nephew and Marci Baker called Not Your Grandmother's Log Cabin. The book is filled with creative patterns all using log cabins in the shape of triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, etc.

That was a good save Lois. I don't have a similar story. I would probably take all the logs and make a string quilt and forget the origial plan.

I remember that quilt. It is beautiful. One of my main problems is counting, or remembering to stop and measure. I once made a long strip of fabric that went from the large family room through the long hall and through my daughters room and halfway back again. I'm not a big planner and didn't really know how much I needed and I was watching TV, so I just kept sewing the 2.5" strips. After I cut them into segments I had enough for 2 quilts. I've done this on at least 2 other quilts. I swear I am counting the number of blocks as I am making them. I'm not sure where I go wrong. (Hard to believe I was a math major in 1970 - good thing I switched to English in 1985)

Oh, Lois, perseverance sure paid off on this quilt! I love your quilt. Is there a pattern you could point me to? If not, I'll start fiddling with triangle log cabin blocks and see what turns up. But I'd love to know the pattern if there is one. Thanks, and again, love your quilt.

I think I have a copy of that book! I thought the pattern looked familiar. I may have to locate it and plan one!

I have had to make modifications on many quilts, or change fabrics because I measured wrong. I've done it so many times I can't remember any specific cases. But I rarely follow any pattern without changing something, lol.
