New narrow kitchen, wondering if my layout is efficient

Hi everyone, I am building a house and trying to finalize my kitchen layout. I am the only human in the house, and not the biggest cook, but I do have to live so I cook at times, mostly on weekends. I have to have my coffee in the morning so I have included a coffee station which will have a small sink. I am also not much for upper cabinets, so you will see I have included only two, preferring to have windows instead. The pantry is separate. There is a peninsula which will seat two, and the kitchen is next to a breakfast nook which will seat four. I think will place the microwave and toaster oven by the fridge where they are most useful, I have range stove, so no separate oven and there is no dishwasher. Please tell me what you think, sorry the drawings are a bit sketchy but I'm doing it myself. I would appreciate any and all comments! I am attaching a picture of the space (I am in Jamaica, we use block and steel construction, the space is a bit more advanced now, electrical and plumbing are in), the layout and my ideas for the cabinetry. Thank you!

A 30" opening to the pantry 30" to the right of the large opening on the left has since been cut. The large opening you see there leads to the breakfast nook. There is also another 25" window now on the right wall next to the large window opening you see dead ahead. The view of the kitchen here is from the living room.

We have a very similar layout, except that our sink and range are swapped, and the U is broken in the top right corner for a door into the kitchen. I really like it overall. (We renovated 12 years ago...back here for a bathroom reno now and of course got sucked right back into the Kitchens forum!) We don't have a microwave, but our toaster oven sits right next to the refrigerator and that's been good. Our coffee station is in the corner near the sink and I do like having water near it--with your layout you might want a little prep sink over there. (We use an electric kettle so no need to be near the range, though ours happens to be.) If you want to make room for one, you could push the refrigerator away from the coffee station, which would also give you more clearance to stand in front of it with the doors open without having your back up against the peninsula. (We don't have a peninsula, but seating like that is the one thing I wish we had in our kitchen, and I recently played with exactly that layout!) We have uppers above the counter on the refrigerator wall, but mostly use those for pantry items since we don't have a full pantry. With one the size of yours, you'd probably be set. (We have a tiny built-in pantry where the doorway to yours is, and a breakfast nook to the left of it.)

I would design for a dishwasher assuming they are generally available where you live, even if you don't plan to have one yourself--someone in the future might want one so I'd have a same-sized cabinet there that could be removed if desired.

Thanks so much, admittedly dishwashers are kind of a luxury here, most people just don't use them, but I will consider an equal size space where it could fit if needs be as things and times do change. I am planning to have a little sink by the coffee station, just not sure if the 36" space is enough to have a small sink and still be able to use the remaining space efficiently. I will consider shifting the fridge a bit over so it don't bump the peninsula, good idea Artemis!

A few thoughts off the top of my head:

Do you really need that peninsula for seating, especially since you already have a breakfast nook? Viewed from above, it seems as though you are really boxing in that pantry opening.

If possible, include space for a dishwasher even though those are viewed as luxury items in Jamaica.

Do you really need a separate trash cabinet? Could you instead put the trash under the sink? If you would decide to leave space for a dishwasher, then this space would be useful to have for a dishwasher (you would have to slide the sink off center).

I agree -- rethink the peninsula unless you need it for storage. Without it your kitchen seating nook will feel more spacious and comfortable, and your pantry will look and feel better. Good luck with your project.

If you keep the peninsula, think about moving the refrigerator in so it's not directly across from the peninsula counter, which is hemming it in. I think 42" is a minimum aisle width in front of a frig.

    Our kitchen…never regret the windows…have a pantry attached…with everything on open shelving…

Pantry includes microwave and toaster oven …both installed up high enough to look in without bending over

Thanks everyone! Really good suggestions. I never though about a no peninsula kitchen but I think it's worth considering as it would open up the space. The breakfast nook is just a couple steps away and has a view of it's own so I wouldn't be giving that up.  I was going to use it for some storage - wine, pet food, cook books but perhaps these can be placed elsewhere.

@Btydrvn I did want more windows! If i had my way they would be on all 3 walls! Originally the left wall should've had a bank of them, but now the garage is on the other side so that was that. There is one more now on the wall to the right though!

@Julieste, yes I think I could put the trash under the sink, it should be able to accommodate a pull out

@kandrewspa and @Artemis, I'll def move the fridge out of the way of the peninsula if I keep it thanks!

@einportlandor thanks for the well wishes, this whole house building thing has been quite the undertaking

Have you consider placing the breakfast nook by the window and have the sink on an island across. Just because the view is incredible. I have a kitchen without upper cabinets. I love it that way. I am not tall enough to reach upper cabinets,

I think you'll be happier if the fridge moves closer to the sink. That way you won't have so much distance to cover when taking foods out of the fridge to be prepped at the sink. Any way to vent the stove to an outside wall? Wise decision about cabinets. All drawers is a great option if you can get that done reasonably.

Btydrvn, your kitchen is very very nice! Really like the feel of everything in your kitchen, thank you for sharing with us.

@Cynthia thanks for the suggestion! I may not be able to switch the nook around at this point though. The nook opens onto low walled courtyard in the back and has a nice view of a hill as well

Oh yes Alice, Btydrvn' kitchen is gorgeous! Love all those windows and those doors that just extend it to the outside

@decoenthusiaste I think I will move the fridge a bit further in based on the comments, my thought was to keep it close to the edge of the kitchen so it was easily accessible without going too far in, but a little further in could work. I have also been puzzled about the venting of the stove, it is against the garage wall now, do you think its a problem to vent it to there?

The thing that jumps out at me is the position of the refrigerator. Would think that it would need to be closer in toward the sink to form a good work triangle. Also, when the fridge door is open in its current position it blocks the flow of traffic.

There has been a lot of talk about changes….it may be time to re-draw the current proposed plan….so it is easier to review…..as to venting the stove into the garage …it seems possible to me ..depending on what the floor level in the garage is..if you plan on a lot of smoky cooking…you may want to approach it differently…perhaps adding a ceiling vent in the garage?…leaving the garage open …more like a carport…could be an inviting security risk ..if you travel much….other security measures make sense for a single woman as well…like window coverings for privacy after dark..and secure locks ( and doors) at all entry points…sadly the world is full of weirdos…☹️

Moving the fridge to leave more space at the end of the counter is a good idea…so you can use that space for more than just your coffee station…also consider a counter depth …double door fridge..takes less floor space… and shallower shelf space is sufficient for one person…

Toaster ovens for $90 now include air fryer capability with a basket. I don't use a micro anymore.

No experience venting stove into the garage. Maybe someone else will chime in about that. As for fridge; ideal is to have it close to sink and convenient to dining area so anything you left off the table, like mayo or butter, can be easily retrieved. It isn't always possible to do that though.

Oh, I just assumed the hood was vented out through the roof. Yes, I would move that if you're not able to vent to outside from that wall. Venting into the garage doesn't sound like a great plan, even if it's technically allowed.

The main thing I'm getting from everyone (thanks as well Norwood Arch) is that the fridge needs to be moved closer to the sink, I'm definitely going to do that. The venting of the hood is new to me as I don't have a stove hood now so I was just thinking garage, as running it to the outside wall would be a bit unsightly. If I can vent to the roof Artemis, I think I will try and do that, or through the garage roof as Btydrvn suggested, if that not possible. Will have a word with the contractor on that today. Dan1888, I was actually thinking the converse, getting a MW that could be used as a toaster oven.

Is there a dishwasher in the design? I can’t seem to see it.

Hi M V, no there is not. They are not very common here in Jamaica. It was suggested above that I create a space where one could easily be installed should I want one in the future

When we are preparing a simple coffee and toast snack.. we need both Micro and oven at the same time.. plus… when you try to get too fancy with multiple uses the cost goes up and the reliability goes down…then when it breaks you have nothing🤷🏻‍♀️

Over the years we have had to replace the micro… but the toaster oven has been a trooper… we also found having them separated …from each other….allows for more flexibility when we need to replace them.. or use them…avoiding the need to search for a specific size….

Don't laugh, but I've had my toaster oven for 20 years, hmmm... time for a new one maybe. Still works perfectly though

Funny!… but confirms my belief it doesn’t need to be out on the kitchen counter…and is why mine is in the laundry room … really… long story but it is really only 6 steps from the kitchen .. no doors between
