they almost look like tick bites minus the actual tick. do you use any sort of flea/tick preventative? i know some of the spot on treatments that you squeeze over the dog's shoulders will work to kill ticks but only after they bite.

i started using the seresto collar on my remaining great dane since she is a young dog (they can cause adverse reactions in senior dogs). these repel/kill fleas almost instantly.

We just got our Serest collar in the mail today. Ticks were the first think I thought of because the scabs appeared a day or two after she had been out rolling around on the lawn. Though I would have expected them to attach themselves and hang on.

demodex would cause hair loss and i'm not seeing that.

keep in mind that ticks will feed and then drop off, many times leaving a sore that will scab over quickly. it's possible that's what happened here. with as long as her fur is, it's possible you may not even see an engorged tick.

I’ve seen demodex in the past, doesn’t look like it. this almost looks like a single pimple that scabbed over. No irritation around it, no hair loss or skin discoloration, no flakiness. I’m going to give her a nice bath and keep an eye on it. If any more appear, it’s off the the vet again.

@Stax i stopped using them because both of my dogs had very bad reactions (bloat-like symptoms). i was not aware of this possibility but in checking, discovered they don't recommend using them on SENIOR dogs, which both of mine were. both of them are long gone.

the dane i have now just turned 2 years old and came from a show breeder. i checked with her and pippin wore a seresto collar last year with zero problems and that is why i decided to use it this year.

i have no idea why that old thread would be showing up as current.

So, was there anything to the reported problems with the collar from last year?

i have no idea. since i wasn't using them last year, i didn't pay attention to any warnings or issues with them. since pip's breeder and many others that i know have used them w/o problems and since this is already a banner year for ticks here, i chose to go this route.

One of my dog has something like that on her back. The vet said it’s a harmless skin tag. It’s been there for two years or so. We are just supposed to put some neosporin on it when it looks open. Then again, my dog is 17 and has much bigger problems.

Joanne, my dog has something like that, only it’s several scabs in one small area. I thought it might be insect bites. It,s between his shoulder blades. Let us know if you find out what it is.

Definitely not a skin tag. The ”scabs” popped up suddenly, and within a few days went from two to about seven or eight of them. They appeared in a small cluster on her cheek, and behind her ears. One was on the inside of her thigh, and a couple on her chest.

I picked one off carefully and put it under a magnifying glass. I could not see any legs or head on it. So probably not a tick. I’m not sure if there are any other types of insects/parasites like this.

I gave her a bath with flea/tick shampoo and a lot of them came off in the process. They left behind little pink spot that I would expect to see when a scab came off. She is now wearing a flea/tick collar. I have an appointment at the vet in a week, the soonest they could get us in, and will keep an eye on her in the meantime.

Very wierd. I’ve had numerous dogs, and also fostered over the years, and have never seen anything like this before.

Oski has quite a few of those scabs (15 approx.) but is not itchy. Vet wasnt sure so gave him a cytopoint shot, oral antibiotics as one looked infected, and topical products. seemed like a shotgun approach but we’ll go with it. He’s 12 now. Joann let us know what your vet says.

So a couple of days ago while waiting for our vet appointment on Tuesday, Sophie suddenly began scratching and licking, and her belly got all red and blotchy. Meaning I looked at her belly, it looked fine, and a half hour later it was red and looked irritated. So I got an immediate vet appointment and off we went.

She said the scabs were just that, little scabs possibly from some pimple-like irritations, and at the two week mark were already loose and falling off. Cause unknown, possibly allergy related.

A sample of the skin surface on her abdomen examined under a microscope showed no yeast or bacterial overgrowth, so some sort of allergic reaction. Not sure why. We used a Seresto collar last year with no issues, so the one she wore for a few days last week was not likely the cause, but I took it off anyway.

Vet sent us home with some Apoquel tablets, and I gave her one, which made her vomit several times, and she was miserable all day. Hiding in the closet, and wouldn’t sit with me, though she is usually extremely velcro. Didn’t give her any more of them, belly rash is gone anyway. Will use an OTC antihistamine if it comes back.

So Sophie is now feeling better, barking at the bunny outside the patio door again, and rolling over for her belly rubs. Mystery not necessarily solved, but as long as she’s ok.

Well, that's good, Joanne. Too bad the Apoquel made her sick. Hope she continues to improve. Oski is a little better after a bath with a medicated shampoo called Douxo, continuing topicals.

be careful with the apoquel if you use it anymore because it suppresses the immune system. long term use (longer than 14 days) can cause some very serious issues.

hopefully, you won't have to deal with this again but if you do and she gets itchy, ask your vet for a steroid injection. if it's an acute problem, usually one injection will do the trick. however, if it's something that turns out to be chronic, you'll have to go a different route.

My Goldendoodle 6 yrs had these black dots on her which she never had before. She was chewing & scratching between her mid back to tail. No ticks or fleas. Some were like scabs from scratch/chew others were just black dots. They were spreadspreading. Noticed she had many in her furry eyebrows.

Bathed her of course they didn't come off . I took a fine tooth comb which didn't do anything.

I started scratching them off & putting some healing sauve on them. With a Vaseline type consistency. I did this 3 days in a row finally catching up to them. Her eyebrows took the longest. They were nothing live, no arms, legs, head or tales. No movement in any way.

Thinking some kind of fungus ? If wasn't any better by the next day It was time for a vet. By that time they were completely gone. Neither of my other 2 dogs ever got anything & they are always together?

It could be an allergy reaction to something and that he is scratching because of that an it causes the wounds.
