That is really yellow! When I used it in my previous house it was quite dull/gray and I ended up repainting with BM Grant Beige which I had used in the rest of the house.

You might want to try BM Classic Gray.

I know I couldnt believe it! Everything I read said it would lean grayer due to the north window.

Hmmm....I have Edgecomb Gray in almost all of my house. Doesn't look like this anywhere. Is your paint a Benjamin Moore paint or a "color match" from a different brand?

Are there any lights on that might be affecting the color? (If so, maybe try a different bulb type and/or wattage.)

For me, it is the perfect "chameleon" color.

I think the ceiling color is throwing off the Edgecomb Gray.

North light does gray best if it has a purple undertone. Paint the ceiling white, the same white you used for the trim, but in a flat finish.

Either will work just fine. Just make sure your whites bright.

Edgecomb Gray has a blue undertone. Great for southern exposure, not for north.

Mary I did get the paint from a store that sells BM so they were able to scan the exact color code, however I did have them put it into a different can of paint (magnolia- which is made by kilz) but the sample card/swatch matches the color

I just used Behr Toasty Gray in an addition and I feel it is very nuetral. Almost has a little of a green cast to it in some light but in others it is very simply

greige.

@katie collins, I agree that the reflection and contrast of your ceiling color might be part of the problem. But it could also be the difference in the base color from using a different brand.

I have Edgecomb Gray in a room with two north facing windows and one west. No yellow at all. I think it's because you used a different paint base. There are many discussions on this forum about how this makes a difference. As far as Agreeable Gray, I know someone who has that throughout her house and it is much more gray than Edgecomb Gray, so don't use that unless that's what you want.

It was too gray in the room I originally wanted it in, southwest facing family room. It looks better in my bedroom though, more neutral

@L A theres no gold paint on the walls. The gold you are seeing is the edgecomb gray. The color before/underneath was a true cool gray

Here are some other photos of Behr's Toasty Gray. It is a really nice warm gray that's not too beige. It is actually very similar to Agreeable Gray but has a tiny bit less red in it.

Katie, Kylie has some really good articles on paint colors. she has a specific one for north facing rooms.

Bet a sample of BM Calm and see how you like it. I used it in my hallway. it's a gray w/no visible undertones.

Read this article on the best whites for north facing rooms, and she explains why certain colors look so wrong. if you want to lighten and brighten, going w/something like High Reflective White may be up your alley since it lends a grayish tone to the color.

Why not buy a quart of BM Edgecomb Gray in the real BM paint formula and paint a large section with it?

That is the only way to know if you have a house with unique/weird lighting or you just bought the wrong base!

Throwing in a vote for Ben Moore Silver Satin. We are finishing up a remodel and chose this as our "all over" color, so foyer, hallways, family room, kitchen, etc. I have it in a few north facing rooms and it's a lovely soft gray that does not look beige. My last house used Pale Oak as the main color, and I really liked that too, I just wanted to go a little more cool toned this time. Pale Oak, and I have found the same for Balboa Mist, tends to lean towards beige depending on what you pair it with. Other colors we considered that I think would work for you (all Ben Moore): Calm, Classic Gray, Gray Owl (this has strong green undertones but in my experience, a green undertone can actually warm things up in a north facing room, it seems like it shouldn't work but it does!).

I think Agreeable Gray is too beige with brown undertone.

The other paint color you asked about...a typo? Tell me again.

Either should work as both have the lavender undertone.

I recently did a north bedroom for a client. There are two north facing and one east facing windows. White is Chantilly Lace and I used B.M. Excalibur Gray for the walls. It most definitely shows purple, but, wow, did it turn out great. Photo from internet:

I have the same issue and used the BM brand - regal select in Matte, then repainted 25% lightened regal select eggshell. No change. Googled many times and never came across this yellow undertone issue until now. And, lo and behold - my flooring is almost identical to yours and I also have quite a bit of greenery closely outside as you do. It's well documented that this shade picks up undertones. I think it's the combination of the floor color and greens outside. I am not painting yet again, will live with it - it IS a pretty color at certain times of day. Let us know which replacement color worked - I will keep it in mind for the next paint job I do. Good luck :-)

I know this is an old post, but throwing in my experience: just painted large samples of Edgecomb Gray in a few rooms based on images of the color in similar southern-facing rooms I found on the internet. Mine looks like the original poster's color-- very tan/yellow and very different from everything else I've seen. Color samples were ordered directly from Benjamin Moore so it's not an issue of the base paint for me...ceilings are white, not like OP. Despite what I've read, this feels like a finicky color.

We have Edgecomb Gray in most of our home. The only room where it looks "yellow" is the southeast corner where there are windows on the east, south & west sides. During the winter, it's fine, but from early April until the trees are in full bloom, the color is "off".

Once the trees leaf out and the sun angle changes again, it's fine.

Late to this post but I have Edgecomb Gray in my bathrooms and hallway and it’s very light and soothing. It’s been 10 years and I still love it. When I was choosing paint for my house I had a painter who loved Kelly Moore and convinced me to try their mix of Revere Pewter and Edgecomb Gray samples. Then I got the BM samples. Painted patches on the wall they looked like completely different colors. KM were muddy and darker. So glad I didn’t go with KM mix.
