Different width hardwood ok?

would it be unusual or look odd if we did 5” herringbone in the kitchen and breakfast room and the rest of the main floor with 7“ straight planks? the kitchen, breakfast, and family room are all at the back of the house in an open concept.

would doing herrigbone in the main hall as well (up until the family room at the back) be a good idea or just to stick to 7” straight planks.

I think if the rooms are defined, then it would be okay. Even though your kitchen and breakfast rooms are somewhat opened, I think it would look great. If you did the hallway, then I would do the entire floor.

Yes! exact same type of hardwood and all the same finish! shown below is the hardwood we will use ! what are your thoughts? im so stressed :(

Yes, it's totally fine since they are different patterns. See the following examples, same wood but different width for H bone and straight lay.

I was going to mix, but the floor I ended up choosing did not have a herringbone option. My installer could have done it on site, but in the end it wasn't worth the extra time and cost. I have large oriental rugs, so I would have ended up covering too much of it to make it worthwhile.

I do like the look. No need to stress!

Just make sure you think about and plan the transitions carefully, so it makes sense with the space and design. Notice most of these herringbone/chevron areas are framed with the planks.

Thank you eberyone!! thank you for the example photos too- i tried looking for some but couldnt find any!

so seems like because kitchen and breakfast is well defined , and different patterns, so the 5” vs 7” sizing should be ok. i will frame the 5” herringbone within the 7” planks (or 5” planks if i am doing 5” herringbone???)!

and thanks- if i do the hallway with herringbone will do the entire floor!

I would frame with the larger plank. Look at the first photo, look at the top right corner of the herringbone. They did a miter in the corners to create the frame. Pay attention to the design, so it looks intentional.

If you did the hallway, you wouldn't have to do the entire floor, but you would then have to make sure the "framing" of the herringbone will look good for both the kitchen and the hallway.

Not a problem to brainstorm and come up with a good design IF you have a good installer.

Wow!!!!!! thank you for pointing that small detail out!!! will definitely make sure we get this too!! and 7” planks to frame it it is :)!!! this saved me weeks and weeks of stress!!

would you do the hallway as herringbone with proper framing or do 7” straight? we want to create the illusion of bigger hallway as the front is more cramped… but 7” is quite wide too so not sure 5” herringbone would be better?! thoughts?
