Yesterday we had our third floor carpeted. It seemed like a safe enough thing to do with young kids in the house. Just close the door and don't bother with it while it off gases; it's not a space we use. However this morning my wife realized there was white, powdery dust and fragments all over everything on the second floor. All the pounding on the floor during the carpet install must have dislodged dust from the ceiling tiles. We've never had these tested for asbestos, but now my wife is upset since we all (including our young kids) slept up there last night in beds probably covered with dust. What's the best thing to do at this point? I feel like testing for asbestos is dumb after the fact. How likely are these tiles to have asbestos? They're in tons of houses; we had originally wanted to remove them but our remodeling plans got sidelined by a lot of other things.

I don't know how anyone remodels with small children, especially in an older home. It seems like everything you tear out or put in is full of toxins.
