I have a small vitex ( chaste tree) in the middle of a perennial bed…it is about 4 feet tall. Apparently I will be cutting off the top 3 feet as it growing from the bottom only. It has never done that before.

I lost a very beautiful orange red coneflower (might be sunrise?) this year. I planted it 2 years ago and had enjoyed 2 wonderful seasons.

@forever_a_newbie_VA8, it is frustrating when an established plant doesn't make it.

Wow, rouge21, so sorry you lost so many plants, that stinks. I ended up losing only one, a Becky shasta daisy that I bought on clearance at the end of the season; I probably planted it too late. I had a calamintha that was very late to show and is still now teeny tiny compared to the others I planted at thr same time, but it’s alive for now. My Gateway joe pye weed finally showed as well, but is still pretty small…I’m keeping a close eye on it.

I had to laugh, I dug up several Stella d’ Oro daylilies last spring and cast them aside under a huge Norway maple in my backyard. They survived the winter, roots completely exposed to the elements, and now have several buds getting ready to bloom. Why are the ”undesirables” so darn hardy??

I lost some very established and usually very hardy plants after the past two winters (Texas):

three lantanas, catmint, two oenothera ’Lemon Drop’, two gaura, two salvia ’greggii’, and a small Crape Myrtle that died to the ground…. in 30 yrs, I’ve never had that happen with a CM.

@lovemycorgi z5b SE michigan, it is the loss of the $$$ JMaples which "stinks". I almost for sure wont replace them.

An allegedly hardy fig did not come back. Luckily, I had another fig that over-wintered in a pot in the garage that is very happy now. Also, Bear's Breeches, although I knew they were kind of on the edge of hardiness and I just had to try them! (Zone 5B)

Rouge21, not just the $$$, but the time invested to care for them as well, perhaps even having designed gardens around them….truly terrible!! Have you any ideas on what you will do with the space left behind?

@mazerolm_3a, I had planted 3 of them and the remaining one is doing just fine. It was the most vigorous one last year. I'll be happy to have one going forward.

One crape myrtle. Not too surprised about that one. I think I’m borderline for its planting zone.

Life is too short to fiddle with prima donnas. I’m moving on.

I forgot to mention that I lost two stands of "Burning Hearts" Heliopis.

My Goldheart bleeding heart didn’t make it, I´m sad to say. I loved that plant. Oh and another heuchera. I should know better. This was supposed to be a hardy one.

I lost three roses in pots. They were done in by a late frost.

rouge -20 without snow is clearly beyond rough! So sorry that occurred. I do hope your Hibiscus rebounds to its former glory. I may have lost mine after 30 odd years, it was the white H. m. Southern Belle. It has always been late to show waiting for the night temps to be to its liking but we have had a cool season and my furnace is still coming on. I hope it shows but I am not holding my breath.

I had a group of three and one always did want to peter out every summer as they often do. This year it didn't even bother coming up at all although the other two grew by leaps and bounds.

I think I'm going to get about five more for back there- it's the back end of my planted "yard" and that gold foliage is visible from my house!

Just realized crocosmia and blackberry lily are MIA. Have had both for many years. Yesterday I discovered deer had eaten the tops off all my phlox. I consider myself lucky they didnt decimate my 100 plus daylilies or my roses.

Me too @Barrheadlass i.e. planted our first crocosmia last summer and it didnt make an appearance this spring :(.

Funny you mention this as our Bleeding Heart, probably 10 to 12 years old, always healthy, barely made an appearance and like you our other BHs were so vigorous this spring.

I lost a handful of Caryopteris; of course I replaced them -- I wouldn't be without them. Also had a well-established milkweed disappear, when I dug there were hardly any roots so maybe voles or red lily beetle.

ETA: Correction: I mean red milkweed beetle.
