Cheap rugs but not this cheap?

Looking for an area rug for DDs. They asked for a riff on one of the guest rooms in Maine, which is essentially orange, white and blue. They like this rug. They are happy to throw pink in to the mix.

I read all of the reviews and they are mostly positive. I like the way it looks in reviewers' photos. A few people complained it looks cheap; well yeah .... $132.99 for a 6'7"x9!

I have no idea how long this will be used or where it will go next. I need decor like I need a hole in the head. I thought I'd spend maybe $300-400. I don't think spending that will get me anything nicer though? Should I just buy it?

I love those colors. Not much to lose, could be very pleasantly surprised. I would go for it.

I vote yes. I got this similar, inexpensive rug a couple of years ago for my DD’s first apt, it’s held up very well and she loves it. She has two cats and a big dog. Rugs USA.

If she can’t use it wherever she lives later, she can donate it. But I think she’ll keep it! :)

I wouldn't. You can get hand knotted wool with a budget of $300-$400.

6x3 Will probably go for $79. Link

6x9 $279.44 click on price for link

That's a nice one. I did try CL but they had nothing. I may as well look, who knows.

The thing is though, I think their apartment is going to have a very stark white new new new feel to it, so I think I need to translate the room they like in Maine from its current somewhat muddy version into a brighter one.

I would get it, Mtn. This is why: DD and SIL liked the gray and white rug in the model home we toured. I found the mfg and looked it up online. The 9 x 12 rug was $400! And it had been in the model home, walked on by thousands of people for at least a year and looks brand new. They ultimately decided to go for the brown and blue scheme and I ended up spending $1700 for a 9 x 12, which last week I would have considered dirt cheap. Conclusion: price does not necessarily correlate with quality. But I would buy them a really, really good felted wool pad so the rug won’t stain their rental’s floors if it gets wet and bleeds.

College students are SUPPOSED to have rugs that look cheap!!

    Looks cute.

This is eye-opening, Nicole and Pal. Who knew?

We might stop in on our way to Maine and get a better look at the finishes for their unit.

Buy a thick pad to go under it and it will instantly feel more expensive (and softer, too!)

What Jojo said. These type of rugs are selling like hot cakes...me being a buyer, because people are figuring out with a nice pad they feel wonderful, and these rugs can take almost any type of wear and tear.

I'm trying to find someone to give my Persian rug to. No kidding.

I love it! Get it! Just go for it. I agree that with a pad under it... it will look and feel fabulous!

    Another yes vote!

I vote yes too. My 20 somethings are somewhat fickle when it comes to decor and are constantly changing things out. A good underlay pad does indeed make any rug feel more luxurious.

DH points out that anything we buy second hard (like ebay) we would want to clean. That would cost more than this rug does!

My youngest has had two inexpensive rugs. They look good!

My vote is to get an inexpensive rug.

When they are through with it, they can pass it on through FB Market Place or Next Door.

Since that one has negative reviews, i would look further.

My dd just bought these three rugs. Evidently she likes grey geometric patterns. they will look great with her furniture.

@mtnrdredux_gw.....The seller I posted has ALL his rugs professional cleaned....before he sells them. I've purchased several rugs from him.....it's true. I feel the same way you do.....I'm not displaying someone elses filth. The BIG one was brand NEW!

I was there today! Tough if you want orange and blue; fine selection if you want neutrals. The issue is, their furniture is all neutral, the walls, etc. The K is all white, too. The rug is one of the few places to add color.

If it looks cheap in the photo. The reviews say it looks cheap in person....it's not for you! You may have to take a risk and order online.....

The reviews say it looks cheap in person

Most of the reviews raved, 2 that I read said it looked cheap. 4.7 stars

Have you looked at rugsusa.com? DD bought from there for the playroom and the family room. No one is ever going to think they are fine antique rugs, but they nicely serve their purpose.

Are the colors too muted in this one? https://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/rugs/rugs-usa-fringed-medallion/Rust/200KHMC04A-P.html

Yes but I think it is almost a silly comment for a dirt cheap rug. At the end of the day it has 2690 Reviews and 4.7 stars so I think it can't be too awful.

Also, as I said in the wallpaper thread, I thought it looked less cheap in customer photos, ironically

At the end of the day it isnt like I am trying to pass it off in my house ... cheap can be cute.

BBSTX, I looked on rugs USA and yes, most of them are too muted for the look they want.

Interesting. In one of the review for this rug someone wrote that they really love the Caitlin Wilson Kismet Rug but can't afford it.

So then I googled Caitlin Wilson Kismet Rug and got some other choices.

This is a good example of something far nicer and still very cheap.https://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/nuLOOM-Handmade-Contemporary-Floral-Medallion-Wool-Navy-Rug-5-x-8-5-x-8/19744252/product.html?option=32846232

I don't think they will go for it because they very pointedly wanted orange accents.

Have you searched on esalerugs? I’ve had good luck purchasing through them. The search feature filters by many parameters (including color intensity).

You can't go wrong with a Safavieh rug. The ones I buy for the porch lasts forever but I get tired of the colors and buy a new one a few years later.

This is the one I recently bought for the LR. Not sure what you consider as cheap, but this looks nice if I say so myself. :)

I think though, you have to temper comments about whether something looks "cheap" with how much someone is willing to pay. I think $133 is very inexpensive for a big rug.

But in this culture where people will buy the cheapest version of everything they can get produced by slave labor somewhere, they may consider a rug that costs more than $29.99 relatively expensive.

You think it's cheap so it's fine if it looks it...and you would be willing to pay 10× if you found something you liked better. But to some people this rug is not cheap because cheaper is available. I am not criticizing your ability or willingness to pay more. I am the same way

On the other hand. I just walked by two rugs like this rolled up on the sidewalk. Basically they probably spent a year or two on some student's floor and they are considered too cheap to move certainly and too cheap to even bother about donating. I am not sure I see the point of such short life cycles. Especially when it's plastic and will be around for a 998 years after it's served it's purpose.

Just like fast fashion. decor trends are shorter and shorter. I hope that starts to change with greater environmental awareness.

Remember these girls will have people in an out. College. Look is important but so is indestructible. Polypropylene is your ticket. Love the one you picked

Jo, great idea about a rug pad

Actually what is the possibility of them using the rug from the Maine guest room in their apartment and you finding another rug for the guest room?

That is how the process used to work, more or less.

Unless the girls plan on living like Nun's, I agree with Arapaho. It's college, let them spill wine because it will come right out! :)

I had typed a response last night and then got pulled away-- but the other thing I threw out there is that there are a few brands with wool options (vs polypropylene) for about the same price point. I have a few inexpensive Safavieh wool rugs -- they do shed but nothing a vacuum can't handle. Most recently I bought a NuLoom rug that with sales and rakuten discount came in under $200. I was surprised at the quality for such a low price.

That said, the rug you selected is definitely striking and has a vibe. Both polypropylene and wool are fairly easy to clean. I would go with the one they like best!

Pal, I thought about that but the Maine one may be too small. We will probably head up tomorrow and I can measure it.

SueB, OOh I like the crystal floretta and I had not seen that one. Thank you.

Oakley and Arapaho, Not nuns but not partiers either. I'm not saying that because I have my head in the sand ... some partying is normal and fine by me. Just an observation about the kind of kids they are. All that said, I can totally see them ruining a good carpet --- i need look no further than their rooms here!

I would get the exact one that they want.

Oh yeah that'd be the $1100 one I am sure! Sadly they have very good taste.

I don't expect any of my rugs will be their style-- but for quality reference I pulled some screen shots. I don't think any were over $200 (but all are runners or 6 x 9 or under)

Safavieh loves their oranges-- but they tend to be more pumpkin than a vibrant orange.

Ooh the first one is especially pretty.

I will have to sit down w my clients today and finalize my remit!

    last modified: 3 years ago

Well that was fast, they want this rug and they want the navy toile wallpaper (see below)

    https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6276085/removable-wallpaper#n=25

Unless the finishes are different that what I expect when I tour, that's our direction.

Off to find orange accessories. : )

This is the moodboard (note the rug will actually be in another part of the room ie the LR area). The feature wall where the paper will be is in the DR area and has "wood" flooring and no rug.
