What is wrong with my Crape Myrtle tree?

The tree sits on west side, so gets full afternoon AZ Sun. Leaves are turning brown along the edges. I water it twice a day 30 min before and after sunset using an adjustable drip as shown below.

If it's planted into clay soil, that's way too much water. Even if you amend the soil, it will sit in a bowl shape of clay that will accumulate water. That stream is probably putting out a few gallons in 30 mins (you can measure it with a cup for 1 min and multiply that by 30 to be sure). I have a crepe myrtle and it's well established but I've always watered it about once a week. The main thing is to let the soil dry out a bit on the surface between watering. Try cutting that watering schedule back to about once every 4 days (or even further if it's still wet). It might need a longer wait time between watering at first to get rid of the excess water.

    Did it just get planted?

Yes. just got planted few weeks ago

Just transplant shock, it’s a bad time of year to plant new ones. It’ll most likely look pretty rough until next year. Keep watering, get it established, it should look much better next summer. And definitely make sure it’s not planted too deep, they will not tolerate that.

ShoShould I be watering more, or less or the same?

I would check the soil and if it's soggy 1 hour after you watered, I would water less. Otherwise if it's a new planting then it could just be transplant shock but I've never seen it that bad.

I really can’t say, not knowing the soil, etc conditions there (I’m in Texas). I’d ask at an established nursery in your town, they’ll know best about a watering plan.

iandyaz, anytime I’ve planted a CM in the hot summer months, it looked very similar to the OP’s. They can be very hypersensitive to certain conditions, but once established, super tough (as I’m sure you know). And IME, overwatering is better than underwatering the first summer.

Totally agree with the above statement.

I agree with the transplant shock. Last year was my crepe myrtles first summer and it looked like that. This summer so far it looks much better. Also you should cut down the watering to maybe every other day.

How is your tree doing, @adi_az_gw? I'm late to this conversation but I know Crape Myrtles don't really like our salt layer. It's recommended that you water deeply once or twice a week (as opposed to short waterings every day) to break up the salt layer in our soil.
