@portlandmysteryrose I don't ask it for much, just that it tolerate the terrible soil it's in and still grow into an enormous, floriferous house-eater in zone 5 is all. Totally reasonable. Lol. I've been trying to improve the soil in that bed for years and it sure is slow going, and yet John Cabot has been vigorous. It's a tough rose for sure.

That is lovely. Can you describe a bit about how you train/prune it? I have a 4 year old John Cabot that became an absolute monster this year. I had to tie canes back several times. Now I wish I had done more pruning but I was not really sure how to tackle it.

@jjpeace (zone 5b Canada) It has a lot of thorns. But also beautiful, beautiful fall foliage.

Fabulous climbers and so well managed! I've had a soft spot for John Cabot for years, but I just can't bring myself to grow a rose that has mild to no fragrance, or I would have bought this a long time ago. If I had a lot of room, I would use it for sure. It's great on your trellis. I wonder how much work it was to train it? Do you have to tie it to the trellis?
