Help! Cedar Ceiling and Dark Flooring

last modified: 4 years ago

Hey Ya’ll,

I’m in need of help at this point. All Googled and Pinterest out 😊 I have Cedar ceilings (i think) and dark wood floor. Can’t change the flooring or ceiling as of now, so I’m trying to figure out what kind of wall paint or decor.

Appreciate all insight. Everything seems to clash.

Thanks,

Ci

Update: WOW! Woke up to all this great feedback. My fiance and I are going through all of it now. Uploading more photos too! This is the sectional we currently have. Let me know if we should opt in for a different color. SN: We have dogs so it would need to be a fabric that is durable. I know, I know no dogs on the couch 😔 🫣

Looks more like pine than cedar to me. I would knock the sheen off of it and paint it. I would remove the chair railings before painting the walls. What's your personal style and what is the exterior style of the home? What is under that open ledge and behind that door?

You have a gorgeous home and I can see how it can be overwhelming to design. First, I agree with decoenthusiaste to remove the formal chair railings as it's not the style of the room.

To compliment the ceiling and floor, consider off white upholstery on the seating and anchor the sitting area and the dining area with large light area rugs to minimize the dark floors. Here are some inspiration pics.

Go all the way with the rustic cabin vibe by painting the walls a creamy white matte paint with a dark charcoal eggshell paint on all the trim.

Soften the space with simple linen window treatments, ceiling edge to floor, with inconspicuous curtain rods, nothing fancy or over designed, like a brushed nickel with super simple finials. If color is your thing, you can add lush 20" square down pillows with trim. Look for fabrics that are textural and light "stone colors".

If you need a layout, I would be happy to help, but need exact measurements. A thumbnail sketch is ok. First take overall dimensions of all areas. Then start in a corner, and measure every little and big space all around the perimeter. When you measure the windows/doors, include the trim. I'll draw it to scale.

How large is your family? Will there be tv? What other specifications and needs do you have? Do you have a specific style? Does anyone have any hobbies that will be in this space? Is there a view or outdoor focus we should be aware?

If you have any questions/comments, please don't hesitate.

I am not seeing 'clash'. LOVE the ceiling. How fabulous that it is not wall board. I agree the chair rail with how the room is now painted has no purpose. I would need a lot of light area rugs to mask the DARK flooring. It won't work to create a space to match the new house..it has to match YOU. What attracted you to this purchase? Give us a hint of your preferences for color/style.

You have cabin ceilings with traditional walls and floors, and the light fixtures don’t coordinate. Pick a style, maybe post some photos of rooms you like? The engineered wood floors can be covered by rugs.

Looks clash-y to me too. The ceiling is very log cabin style while nothing else is. I think I would paint it too.

    And remove the chair rail.

I think huge area rugs will be your friend I agree no chair rail and a nic epal green for the walls witl work with both woods and before choosing that change all that lighting to something that goes with your style which BTW you have not shared with us. You might even be able to just go white walls. Do you havbe a view out those awesome windows ? If you do go solar shades to control the heat and the UV but keep the view and mix those with drapes for nightime privacy if that is an issue .So much depends on your style so please let us know that. If you have furniture you are bringing then show us that.

Good Morning and Happy Sunday to All. Thank you!!! ❤️❤️

@decoenthusiaste hi there! I thought about that too (removing the sheen) but I think we will give it a try first as is. A lot of the comments say to remove the chair railings. We will do that. Where the windows and doors are leads to the backyard porch. I feel like I dont have a style yet. Uploaded pics for inspo and thats our current couch.

@arcy_gw thank you this is our first home! Very excited. Ligher rugs to go with the floor that’s a good idea. We have dogs so if that’s the route we will need to shampoo often which is fine.

Still trying to discover my taste. I uploaded pics for inspo. We live in the Orlando, FL area so something that will compliment the ceiling. Removing the chair railing is a theme on this thread we will do that thanks!

@Diana Bier Interiors, LLC agreed! Have a great Sunday!

@littlebug zone 5 Missouri Appreciate ya! Thanks 🙂

@ShadyWillowFarm Hello there! Yes, thats a good point about the lighting fixtures. What about iron black for the lighting? I uploaded pics for inspo and added a current picture of our couches. thoughts?

@Patricia Colwell Consulting Happy Sunday Funday! I typed in Epal green but its showing me candy apple green for some reason lol. I think its a light pastel green? Out those windows you will see a big backyard 🙂 The sun hits more of the front of the house while the living room and dining room is more in the back. Uploaded some more photos. Im thinking maybe white walls but theres so many different variations of white makes my head spin lol.

I feel like my style needs some work. Lost a bit in that aspect of my life. However I did upload some inspo pics for a start. If I had to give it a shot I would say Colorado Modern Cabin. But how do I have that flow nicely when I live in Orlando, FL?

@Denise Marchand Hello! On my gosh, where do I begin. Thank you for taking out the time to be so thorough and detailed. To an absolute stranger at that lol. Thank for you the comment on the house. This is our very first home we are excited and truly blessed in this market. Speaking it over with him, a white wall seems to be a good idea and definitely will remove the chair railings. We have a gray couch. Do you think that could work in anyway or should it be sold? We have fur babies no human babies as of yet. No hobbies that would tie into the decor. I really like the second picture you sent. Also Also, in Orlando FL so I would like to tie in a Modern cabin Fl vibe. If that makes any sense

Is the chair railing just in the dining area? If so, it's actually functional! Well, it can be.

Keep the wood on the floor but paint or whitewash the way too shiny ceiling. It's distracting.

The chair rail is really not appropriate for this contemporary style home.

    Paint the walls

Get some rugs. Here's how it could appear

That dining room light location might need to be moved.

@BeverlyFLADeziner Wow. Just by painting the celings white or whitewash it opens up the area so much. I’m going to look it up to see if that’s something we can do. For the accent wall I like those colors. Never really gave thought to them. I like the lighting that you added too.

Yes the ceiling is shiny now that I’m looking at one of the pics. This is great Bev. Thank you!

@Fori it’s both the living and dining area.

Hi CICI and good morning to you, too! Your first house! Be proud as you should be.

A successful interior design project takes years, so enjoy the journey. I suggest keeping a file on inspiration pics, colors, furniture, accessories, art, lighting, fabrics so you can refer back when purchases get confusing. I always tell my clients to have a Master Plan, as even designers sway off course.

There's the color grey and the color grey, just like white. ...Just saw your new post. Nice sofa and you can definitely work around that color. How large is the rug you presently have? Might be able to work around that. The rug should be large to accommodate the space.

What??!! No dogs on the sofa? I didn't get that memo. How do we whisper our secrets in their ear? A fantastic washable blanket works for me. I like twin size comforters with duvet covers, easy to wash.

Black light fixtures will make a big difference and modernize the rooms. Don't overdo it and don't match them. If you look at well designed rooms, lighting is like jewelry (or shoes) on a good outfit. Fixtures set the tone. Hold out for light fixtures that are not run-of-the-mill big box stores. I'm in LA and do so well on craigslist (Beverly Hills!) for high end accessories and lighting. Also, LampsPlus online, without getting too expensive.

BTW you do have a style: the foyer you posted is so good.

I haven't commented on the hi gloss ceiling because it's not offensive and there is nothing else in the room to focus on. It's a big project, I agree to hold off, unless your painter wants to take it on. IMHO It should be a low luster finish, but again not annoying.

For future fabric selections, look at https://www.perennialsfabrics.com/

Perennials Fabrics are hi performance indoor/outdoor fabrics and amazing. I recently poured catsup overnight on a swatch for a client and cleaned up like magic.

I was asking about the door and ledge above it that are opposite the exterior openings? Is that a closet or half bath?

To save time and labor the ceiling can be sprayed white.

I think the natural stained ceiling gives the room a lot of character, and I would not paint it, especially white.

Before you start covering the wood ceilings, take some time to figure out what you like. Denise is already giving you excellent advice AND offered to help you with furniture placement. Take her up on that!

A first house IS overwhelming. Start saving photos on Houzz — a different folder for every room. The more you look at photos and save them, the more obvious your taste and preferences become obvious to you. (The end result of my kitchen re-do looked a whole lot like the photos I saved.)

Rugs will do more than tone down the dark floors. They define seating areas and eating areas. Let the generous pros help you with the big rooms that can be hard to figure out when you’re standing in them.

Congratulations on a new house! Decorating is a loooong journey. Try to enjoy it. You’ve got help here.

White wood ceilings tend to focus the attention down to the area of the room where you live.

Respectful to all other comments, don't paint a feature wall, as there is too much going on in this space with the ceilings, floor, windows and openings. Keep the walls and window treatments one color to keep the shell neutral and contain a space that is conducive to your lifestyle.

Concentrate on area functions - seating, dining, etc., art, lighting, and of course music.

The only reason I recommended a painted feature wall is because of the plant shelf. If you don't paint it a contrasting color the next question will be.......well what do I place on the plant shelf?
