replacing appliance-stainless frig with black stainless

We are buying a house and the current owners insisted they take their refrigerator. We didn't think anything of this until we started looking at replacing the refrigerator. The current appliances are LG black stainless steel. While I don't love the color to begin with, I am coming across many articles about the issues with black stainless peeling and scratching. I don't want to spend more money replacing a refrigerator in a color I don't like just to have the other appliances peel or scratch in the future and want to replace all of them. We don't want to spend a ton of money in this house but are debating what to do.

Option 1: Replace all appliances with a less expensive stainless steel package (around 3200 + tax and install)

Option 2: Buy a black stainless frig to go with the other appliances and pray they all last and don't scratch or peel (less expensive option is around $1800 plus tax)

Option 3: Buy a stainless frig and mix it with the other appliances and replace them all as needed (there's a $1200 GE Slate that is an option, have seen reviews recommending it go best with the black stainless)

You'll find opinions really vary with this all over the place. How long do you plan to stay in the house? That could come into play here.

The problem with Option 1 is buying appliance packages is usually not a good idea. Each appliance should be purchased individually based on features and your needs. That often means different brands. We have all stainless appliances in the kitchen that are different brands. My problem with Option 2 is it would be very hard for me to spend money on another black appliance. Option 3 with a stainless fridge would be my choice. Again, it really depends on the time you plan to be there.

I've seen the "peel and scratch" issues you mentioned here on Houzz regarding black appliances. I would consider that, along with your mention of not liking the color.

Option #3. Buy a stainless refrigerator now. Replace the others as needed.

I agree, just buy a SS fridge for now.

I have to agree plain old stainless for the fridge now and then down the road get appliances that actually function for you in plain old stainless . IMO there is no maker that makes every appliance well so stainless lets you buy what works not becuase it all matches So option #3

Can you afford to replace all the appliances now? If so, I would go that route in stainless. I had a kitchen with mis-matched appliances, and while no it's not the end of the world and yes is considered a first-world problem, it looks SO MUCH BETTER when all the appliances match. It just does. But, if money is too tight, then just get a new fridge in stainless and replace the others as needed or as funds allow.

The house of majority of my childhood years had a turquoise wall oven, cooktop, range hood, and porcelain sink, white refrigerator, with orange countertops. The sink and range hood were changed to stainless steel and a stainless steel dishwasher added in the mid 1970s. Next house to which we moved in the early 80s (built in the early 70s) had an avocado wall oven, cooktop, range hood, and dishwasher. The stainless range hood was relocated from the other house, and the white refrigerator brought along. All that stayed the same until the early/mid 2000s when the wall oven and dishwasher changed to white, cooktop to brushed chrome. Stainless range hood remains and refrigerator is white. Countertop microwave is black. No one ever made any disparaging remarks or ran screaming away in disgust at gatherings of family or friends at either house with any of the appliance color combinations.

Option #3 but not the GE slate that you also mentioned in Option #3. Stainless steel will look good, though don’t get the ”fingerprint resistant” stainless steel cause that finish is a cheap coating that ends up looking worse.

A stainless steel fridge will brighten up things since a fridge has the largest surface area of all your appliances so a black fridge really makes things dark.

Thanks, everyone. I think we will go with the regular stainless frig for now. If it totally drives me crazy, I will go ahead and replace all of them. This wasn't something we had planned to do in this house since all of the appliances were relatively new but it is what it is. We haven't even moved in yet and already there are things not lining up that will cost us extra that we didn't factor in. We also wanted to match the hardwoods into the bedrooms to replace the carpet. They are discontinued and the cost given by one contractor was 3x what we paid for floors just 2.5 yrs ago. So now looking at carpet options and I totally hate carpet.

Smart decision. Replace one appliance at a time and get the best quality that you can. Yes, there are always expenses that you can’t anticipate! Good luck with your home! (And you might be surprised at some of the really fabulous carpet out there!)
