Shower floor tile can be slippery, especially once soap or shampoo is added to the water on the shower floor, so a smaller non-slip textured tile with grout in between is my preference. Your MIL may be healthy now, but is there room for a shower chair plus grab-bars in the future? I would go with the penny round tile because it gives you the security of more grout underfoot. An “adorable” textured subway tile may not offer enough security for anyone. I would also use a shower mat with suction cups and bathroom rugs with non-slip textured backing.

I quite agree with felizlady above; use the penny tiles on the floor, subways on the wall. As she suggested, make certain there is room for a shower chair and grab rails in the future.

I very much admire your top set of color and texture choices. It's neither humdrum nor too precious, a scheme you can enjoy for a very long time.

Thanks for the comments. We do plan for grab bars, bench, and a combination shower head with handheld. I think penny tiles would look good with the subway tile, butI keep going back to this Modern Textile Medium Gray 1x3 as it has a matte heavy texture that would not be slippery at all but I think there maybe too many horizontal lines within the room. Plan to run the subway tile stacked horizontal. Here is a closeup of the 1x3 tile. Too many rectangles in the room?? Thanks!

The European Tiles I have purchased for the floors of this house (Caribbean) have skid ratings. Skid/slip ratings have to do as much with the tile material & finish as with the texture- you cannot tell by look/feel because you can't know how water reacts with the surface (part of the rating system). As an aging person will be using that shower, I highly recommend you use only tiles that are rated for poolside use OR a grout-heavy traditional bathroom floor mosaic, like the penny tiles.

I do not know about the US tile rating system. You should find out what the recommended usage for any tile is before you chose to use it on that shower floor. Those 1x3 mosaics will probably look terrific, but check they are anti-skid for floors.

Other than the thought that your choices look timeless and very well considered, I'm not chiming in on the decor. It's just that we've cared for three elderly parents during our 38 years together and are now aging ourselves. My husband slipped in a puddle of solvent (not at home) a few years ago and snapped his ankle entirely so now has titanium rods and a long strip with 9 screws in his ankle. Slip safety is one of my primary concerns.

A good tile supplier will guide you as to the proper tiles for a shower or a wet environment.

Before you go with penny tiles, look at the previous postings on this site relative to penny tiles. People have installation issues with them from time to time. I don't know how prevalent they are since we only hear about the ones that go wrong here. But it's clear that the average jack of all trades contractor probably shouldn't be trusted to install them. It requires a skilled tile setter. If you find that a daunting thought, look at hexagons or squares as an alternative. Don't worry about too many rectangle shapes - faucets and light fixtures don't need to be rectangular, and of course toilets are naturally not. While rectangular sinks have been popular lately there are still plenty of people who don't like them and install oval ones. That's what I put in my MB last year. You have a nice rustic look going.

We are working with two reputable local flooring stores for our flooring so I will get more information from them on the slip ratings for the tiles. Originally I thought the penny would be more of a slip hazard but didn't consider all the grout that will be around them. Maybe once I get the safety information I need for the shower floor tile, the decision will be much easier. The designers were stating a lot of information all at once when we were picking out tile, and I was becoming overwhelmed with the choices. Thank you for all the great information. And I do feel better about the design choices. I know our style is probably kind of plain by most standards but we aren't drawn to fancy. Want to have a nice bathroom for my sweet mom but want to keep her safe.

This shower floor is a black basketweave pattern and looks nice with the black shower doors/fixtures and wood floors. Maybe a matt black penny tile could work also?

Don’t switch to the medium gray tiles - keep the whites. Are you able to do a curb-less entryway for your mom’s shower? The only time it’s reasonable to do that feature is in a new build. If it’s your forever house, you will want the curb-less entry for yourself later on.

If not, make sure it’s super low! A solid piece of marble as the threshold works well with most designs - even your slightly rustic look. We live on a horse farm and I would do that bathroom design combination in a heartbeat!

Yes. It will be a walk in shower. I suppose there has to be some threshold for the LVP to shower floor transition. I will need to discuss these details with flooring designer. I am learning so much from this group! Thanks for suggestion to keep the whites. Other opinions help with decisions!
