Yes, sun drops aka evening primrose aka oenothera fruiticosa.

They are fast spreading but they are quite simple to remove...simply pull.

The better name for Oenothera fruticosa is Sundrops. They are a daytime flower that closes at night.

LOL!! I guess it depends on what source you refer to :-) I've read that the flowers open in the evening but then remain open well into the next day.

I am not fond of them and consider them more or less weeds. Ripped them out of a previous garden so can't verify that personally.

All I know is they are open early in the morning after I go out. I'll have to pay better attention, but it just seems they close mid-day like chicory unless it is cool and cloudy. If they open in the evening, I'm not there. I did bring some home and sprig them into the matrix. We shall see what happens.

Southern Sundrops are in the Evening Primrose family--Onagraceae. That's why they are sometimes called Evening Primrose, although there are some 650 species in the family. Mine are open during the day too!

They are a very cool native plant that hosts a few species of specialized native bees. They can handle dry soil which is why I have them planted in my rock wall.

as mom aged... and couldnt keep up in her garden.. this plant took over the whole garden ..

we had to sell the house to get away from it ...

there is nothing charming or nice about this plant that has world domination proclivities ..

and NO.. it didnt just pull out ...

I'm going to try them but on a island type area surrounded by concrete in my yard so they hopefully can't take over...

I had these in pink and really liked them .

Mine never took over but they came up in random places.

The pink ones are a different species, Oenothera speciosa.

Hmmm. I can easily pull them out as well. Once they finish blooming just yank nearly all of them out and the survivors will grow better with the extra space, and you'll get a longer bloom season from the more vigorous plants. Don't wait too long after blooming to pull, they spread by runners and the runners go out after blooming is finished, and the runners won't come up with the stalk anymore once they're rooted in on their own.

Some of the evening primroses open in... the evening lol... These are open during the day and now I'm curious when they open. I'll have to look quick since they're almost done for the year.

Oenothera tetragona

O. speciosa has a reputation of being an aggressive spreader, especially in warm to hot climates. O. fruticosa (which looks like what's pictured above) has never been a problem for me, in the NYC area or in Kentucky. The clump I have now is a division from my late father's garden. It flowers for a few weeks in mid-late spring and looks good the rest of the growing season. It and its neighbor (a purple bee balm) co-exist peacefully.
