I would get a large enough rug so that the front feet of all furniture is on top of the rug. If going with a standard sized rug, it might mean that part of the TV stand needs to be on the rug, too. Or, you can get a rug cut/trimmed out to fit your specified measurements.

Can you stand in front of the window at the end of the room and shoot a pic to the end that is behind the chairs? You will need a larger rug for sure, but I think you may need a better furniture layout first.

I suggest you get the largest rug you can afford but look for a dark natural fibre type rug. Get an irregular shaped coffee table and move the artwork you have to the right of the window to the left of the window, and then hang a much flashier big artwork on the right of the widown, where the old one used to be.

Or, instead of a bold geometric rug and wispy curtains that almost disappear, get an earthy boring rug and get brightly patterened geomatric curtains

Have you ever considered angling the TV into the corner where the cat condo now stands and then buying an L-sectional, one end corner of which would fit into the corner-window where the TV now is, and then goes all across that back wall opposite the beams?

I see a lovely old house trying to accommodate today's larger everything. Without replacing the furniture and the t v, consider replacing the window with a transom. It will give you the solid wall you need.

Suggestion for the dining area...move the table to the center of the room and hang a chandelier.

@elcieg That is a great idea, but the large window is the only window on the front of the house so I want to keep that. For the dining area, I would love to have the table centered under a chandelier, but there is barely a foot between the wall with the mirror & dining chairs & I think it would block off the door too much. Fitting today's furniture is definitely a challenge with these older homes! The house is about 2,000 sq. ft., just broken up so strangely

The rug won't work. How about using it in a bedroom? I would start by painting the columns/room divider white to match your other trim and doors. That will help lighten and brighten the spaces. Do you have the budget to re-work the column room divider? I'm thinking if the two ends were open passageways and the center was closed, you could hang TV there. This is the idea, but the bookcases would be your columns. Then the sofa could go in front of the window opposite the divider.
