Sometimes when it’s way too hot, a young plant doesn’t have the root structure to adquately draw water form the ground , even the soil is moist. I agree, mulch and shade wold be helpful. In some environments it’s best to grow the plant in a pot in part sun until the roots are more extensive.

The outside of the leaves are dried out. It's a lack of water issue. My guess is no matter how much water you give it, it can't keep up with the water loss through the leaves. Good idea to mulch, but I think shade in the afternoon is more important.

Plunk a lawn chair over it for shade. 114 is hot!!

Definitely emphasis on the shade.
