Here it is. The leaves are smaller this year, I wonder if it has to do with the fact that I left the pot on the porch all winter with no protection - ? (I normally move the pot inside the barn for the winter but t for whatever reason just didn't this past winter).

media wears out .. 5 years is a long time ..

its job is a water management .. and that is what fails.. water is o longer moving thru the pot properly ... perhaps running down the sides.. instead of going down thru the media... and all of a sudden you have a plant in drought in a pot that you know you water ...

then the roots start goring out toward the edges.. and the middle is barren.. or just a gob of dead roots ...

its time to repot ... sorry i cant offer you excuses otherwise ..

ps: you got darn lucky with winter ... when i moved 1650 pots of hosta out here from livonia... i lost about 185 blues .... they sprouted early.. and then did not like being in cold sodden wet spring pots ....

I'd repot it at least. 5 years is a goodly amount of time without refreshing the dirt. And by the looks of the leaves, you could probably divide it if you wanted to.

I had not repotted my Blue Angel for several years as I was lazy. I would move it to a larger pot and put new medium in the bottom and on the sides, but I did not completely repot it. When I finally decided to do it, the center soil/medium was heavy clay.

The "soil" decomposes in time and becomes clay, which is hard to get water into and out of. It's like the end result of a compost pile that is never turned.

I am not a potter except to nurse a plant along, but I would say if your leaves are smaller, that’s an indicator to re-pot.
