Advice on double island lighting

We’re currently building our home. Our two islands are approximately the same length (about 96”), but the first island is much wider. The second island is more of a counter-height table as it will have seats on both sides.

Currently, we have two pendants over the second island and recessed lighting over the first. The islands changed lengths from the original plan during the build so the lighting decisions were made prior to making the islands the same length.

Our original thought was that the second island was more of a hangout/dining space (when guests come over) so we put the pendants there.

What do you think would look best for lighting over both islands? Pendants? Linear chandelier? Recessed? Adding a barn light over the sink? Just not sure we’re there yet and would love your thoughts. Thanks!

I would leave as is - no pendants over large island

No pendants over the "big" island - leave as is if you think there will be enough light for prep work; yes to lighting over the sink and under the cabs.

I like what they did in this kitchen:

Pendants on the "gathering" island and a linear fixture on the work island. I like that they mixed it up and I think just leaving in recessed cans above the work island makes it feel too "blank". Note that the linear fixture has an airy feel to it to keep the space visually light.

Bottom line is, you can go any way you wish. My personal preference is to add decorative lighting over each island.

As is but add a decorative light over the sink for balance.

No more pendants. Long view from the adjacent room is the lowered ceiling over the kitchen. Between two different ceiling heights plus 2 pendants, IMO, adding more pendants will really clutter up things.
