Base moulding size

We have an older home that currently has 3 1/4 base moulding and 2 1/4 casings. We can’t go larger on the casings becasue there are areas where there simply is no room. Can/ should we increase the base moulding to 4 1/4? Or just stick with what is currently in place? I feel
like it looks too big.
