It's a fly that lays eggs in the flower bud. When the larvae hatch the bud rots.

Instead of elongating they look wadded up. I have an infestation on a few plants. They showed up last year, but I didn't research well enough and was picking the bad buds and tossing them in the drive way. When it showed up again I found the above page and have been picking the bad buds, putting in a plastic bag, tying it off and disposing in the garbage.

I have never had them, but I had heard of them. That is the treatment I remember. Seems like I remember that by the time you find them, usually the damage is done, and disposing of them this way works.

Yes, and I think it will take a couple of years to mostly control it. Now that I've learned what to look for I can get them as early as possible. Fortunately it is only affecting a few.

May I ask where you are located? The last I heard they were only in the Pacific Northwest and Maine. I am not looking forward to their arrival here in Indiana.

Still having issues with the Midges. A bit worse this year than last. I think I'm being to selective about which buds to pick off as I would like to see some flowers. I think I will have to much less selective in order to get rid of them. I've been doing some seed crosses in hopes of developing some unique varieties we could sell in our small nursery, but at this point I wouldn't give them away for fear of infecting someone else's garden with these damn things. Ugh!

I have a number of cultivars that have dried-up, aborted buds, many with twisted and deformed buds. I attributed it to thrips. How is this different?

There are many different thrips and gall midges, and I am no expert on these insects.
