do you have some money budgeted for the space? the cabinets had the doors removed and the wonky thing resting on counter / the curio shelves as well....add up the inches and with new cabinets for the walls you can gain good storage back. Someone can match the lowers and get you a replacment door for the sink unless it is sitting around somewhere. Id get that fixed.....different hardware on the lowers....definitely swap out for new uppers and consider new counters. here are wall cabs with a little more trim or stacking effect if you want the expense of that.

Even if you added something to the wall, theres so much clutter from the open cabinets and the counter that it will just add to the confusion. Verbo is right, purge, purge, purge, then declutter. That alone will make a huge difference. By taking the doors off of the cabinets, you made THOSE into the focal point, they should be neat and presentable. If you do get to the point where everything is under control, Id start with a removable wallpaper to see if I would even want a pattern on the wall. Sometimes things get overwhelming, and it looks like youre there.

If you have no plans to change anything in the kitchen and you are only interested in adding tile between the upper cabinets and the ceiling, no, I would not do that. What I would suggest instead is to change the curtain. Get a roman shade or similar and place it close to the ceiling so it’s not blocking the window except for a few inches at the top. The curtain will break up the space. Agree with other’s advice to declutter and update the cabinet hardware.

I don't think the expense of putting a 'back splash' on the walls above the cabinets gets you anything. From standing no one could see it and I am not getting the impression you have an open concept space so no one is standing back all that far from your kitchen. I would look at raising them or putting in a false spacer with crown so it gives the visual of full height cupboards. I too have a very small kitchen and it's been a challenge but in the end freeing to avoid this centuries call to kitchen gadgets. Toaster/blender are used so seldom they don't get to take up premium counter space. Kitchen's our size is why over the stove microwaves were invented. They still are the best bang for your buck.

No backsplash. Have you considered adding a dishwasher to the right or left of the sink? A good time to do that is before you paint the lower cabinets.

Well that changes a lot! I still would do a fair share of decluttering, then post a pic. Its hard to visualize when theres so much going on..

Upper and lower cabinets should match. Counter should go with the cabinet color….if granite, should have a little of the same color as the cabinets. Definitely have doors on all cabinets. Declutter fridge door. Maybe new handles on cabinets. Put everything inside cabinets except for canisters….they can be colorful, if desired.

It is evident you do not have the time to de-clutter. How will you have the time to make these changes? Where is that time coming from? If there is time, then I would dedicate any of it to de-cluttering, and then see what time is left for these changes. But de-cluttering should be your priority, not any of the stuff you are suggesting.

Black will just remove the rest of the light out of the room and make it seem evn more closed in. And will show dirt 10x more than wood. It’s a high maintenance look that requires adding a lot of extra electrical for more lighting.

I'm aware of the clutter in the kitchen and I can say that it doesn't look like that all the time. I'll send a new picture when I get home and I'm definitely adding doors just waiting for my Dad to finish them

don't, really! extend your cabinets to the ceiling or add trim all around, then place some paintings and earthy pots and vintage glasses on top. but if you must, find yourself some authentic and proper italian tiles, esp those ones popular in southern italy. they are never in one color, but more of floral or landscape inspired.

See the difference in the space right and left of your window? Adding splash that pulls the eye up there will just make it more obvious. Finish the cabinets and counter. Clear up the clutter and post a new dilemma if you're still looking to do more.

Just a quick note - unfortunately most people don't read through all the comments so you will be repeating yourself over and over that you are getting doors and painting the bases black. My suggestion would be to alter your original post to say that. This way folks have all the information about what is happening in your space.

Personally - I would not do tile on top of the cabinets.

If your dad is building the cabinets, have him extend them to the ceiling instead of adding any other design element up there. Tons more storage. Also, remove the two display shelves on either side of the window, and have him build cabinets for those areas instead. Have the cabs end equal distance from the window.

I agree you don't need anything for above the cabinets. I think once you get the bottom ones painted, doors added and add new hardware it will look good.
