75th birthay bash

Jim turns 75 next week, and I decided to throw him a real party and to invite almost everyone we know here. Since we've only been here 6 years, and lead quiet retirement lives, our guest list is 24, confirmed. I'd invite you all if I could.

We are fans of a local restaurant that's just a simple BYO taqueria. The owners are from Arizona and they specialize in real Southwest food, no tex-mex here! My parents lived in AZ for 30 years, and we love the food. Shannon and Liz also have a full-service bar and grill down in Fishtown that's very popular, and Shannon is a talented chef.

A year ago they remodeled the upstairs room and have since held once a month special 5 course dinners with creative menus and complementary cocktails (can't sell liquor, but they can give it away) for $75 per person, held on Sunday and Monday once a month. It's a fabulous room, and dinners are generally under 25 people, but it can easily hold 30 to 35.

Shannon came up with a menu, and Abby, the bartender/manager at the other restaurant will have creative mixers. I am providing Mexican beers, Monterey County wines, wine for Abby's fabulous sangria, and gin, vodka, tequila and rum. This isn't a big drinking crowd, I'll be taking a lot home.

Here's the proposed menu. I meet with Shannon today, so we may tweak it a bit. Not yet sure if it will be served buffet style or family style. I want people up and mingling as much as possible,

Traditional Cheese Crisp with guacamole

Elote

Rajas and Cheese Tamales with red enchilada sauce

Chile Rellenos with beef picadillo

Adobo Shrimp Cocktail with avocado sauce

Carne Asada Skewers with pico de gallo

Red Chicken Empanadas with chipotle crema

Braised Cabbage with poblanos and white beans

Calabacitas

Roasted Artichoke Hearts in a Veracruz sauce

Green chile pork tacos with diced onion, cilantro and pickled radish

Dessert - Cake with fresh strawberries

I will have no decorations. The room is colorful enough. We have requested no gifts, but just bring the funniest card you can find.

Oh, and the really big deal is that Jim's cousin will be flying in from Hawaii the day before. He doesn't know about that yet. They are very close but haven't seen one another in almost 10 years.

Sushi.. that's a wonderful menu and I remember you talking about how much you enjoyed their special dinners in the past. I think it all sounds lovely .. my only thought that is if the guests aren't big drinkers, you could probably stick with beer, sangria and one hard liquor (my vote would be tequila but rum or vodka are probably more universally liked).

Sounds fabulous! I especially like the funny card idea. People want to bring something and that addresses that quirk of human nature and will be so entertaining.

It sounds like you've planned the perfect party for your Jim, and what an extra lovely touch that his cousin will be there to surprise him!

Sounds perfect! A great mix of fresh items and caloric indulgences. And even though I just ate breakfast, your menu made me very hungry.

Edited to add - Aren't you in the Philly area? If so, that restaurant sounds like a great find.

Sushipup, you’ve done a great job planning a wonderful birthday dinner for Jim. The menu looks varied and tasty. Maybe we’ll all show up ;) Please give Jim my best wishes for a wonderful 75th.

I think I’ll put my family in touch with you for birthday ideas. You’re good.

I don't know what 90% of the menu is but it sounds fun! :) Happy Birthday to Jim. It sounds like the perfect sized group and a great restaurant. Enjoy!

We are in the Philly area. See the link to the restaurant. And the food is unique. Most of the items are not on the regular taqueria menu. And yes, I already have the booze. There are several mixers available, and I know at least two people who won't touch tequila. I'll bring the rest home.

Of the guest list, only 8 have been to the upstairs dinners. And the others are not familiar with the food. Even our neighbors who spend time in Cancun every year don't know the food.

We have decided that we will not 'surprise' Jim with his cousin at the party. If all goes well (prayers to the airline gods), she'll arrive Weds. morning, I'll pick her up, and she will call him at home while we are on our way.

I take very little credit for 'planning'. Shannon and I tweaked the menu. The room itself is special. It's really just a rift on the monthly dinners. No balloons, no decorations.

Of course, all this doesn't mean that it doesn't keep me awake at night.

This sounds like the perfect celebration. The menu is fabulous! I agreed with Funkyart about downsizing the liquor, but since you already have it, nevermind. Best wishes to Jim, and safe travels to his cousin.

My college son works part time at a place that hosts special events, and it's such a nice trend to see in the restaurant industry.

^^^ awake at night. It will all work out nicely. Time for you to give in, be kind to yourself, and enjoy the merriment.

Perfect! And what a nice menu. Love the card idea, and by tasking them with it, , hopefully you can stave off presents.

It looks like a very good menu. Kevin and I both love Chiles Rellenos, but I seldom make them.

I would prefer buffet style rather than family style because people can easily become isolated if it is family style.

I met with Shannon this afternoon. 4 dishes will be served as appetizer/finger foods put out as people start to arrive. We'll have 3 tables of 8, the family style for the rest of the dishes will work well that way.
