It appears to be a fancy leaf geranium, possibly Vancouver Centennial lacking its coloring from being grown indoors. Pelargoniums are not winter hardy except in the warmest zones (9 and above), so planting outside only works for the summer months. If you want to keep it, you will need to bring indoors for winter.

do proper hardening off when taking a plant outside.. from inside .. no direct tun for at least a week ...

planting season in the garden is spring ... its not the heat of summer.. you will probably kill it if you plant it now .. [though i admit i have done such with gifts i didnt really want.. lol ...]

you can plant it in fall .. but then again.. you will have to dig it up to take it back in for winter... so why not just leave it in the pot ..

repot it if the media in the pot is worn out ... ask if you dont know what that means ..

You’ve been lucky enough to be given three big, healthy, attractive Pelargoniums. They can live outside in summer, either in the ground or in containers. In winter they can go in a sunny window or glass porch providing it doesn’t go below freezing. There’s also a lot of growth there which could make cuttings. They are pretty easy and you could have a dozen by next year.

Don't worry gardengal, I found Ken's rant amusing. Unfortunately, my friend died and I am the executor of her estate and could not bring myself to just trash the plants. She was 80 years old and loved them.

They have been sitting outside facing north for a few days now. Today they will go into the ground facing west and we will see what happens. I can shade them if I need to.
