The obvious change would be a stacked W/D, with a storage unit beside it. Configure the space to your needs. If you “dry until damp, then hang”, install a rod for hanging with storage cabinet/shelves above it.

Agree. Do you need hanging space? If so add some hooks, too. Can you squeeze a laundry basket in there?

Above the existing W/D ,closed upper cabinets if you need storage, otherwise, I'd have just one closed cabinet for unsightly thing and open shelves for handy grab items. A close to the wall fold out drying rack at the end with a slim hamper underneath. any chance you will replace the W/D, I'd go for front loader(s) stacked, then make a counter for folding with Hamper underneath counter. Keep the room light and bright with a fun light fixture and one wall of fun wallpaper or paint to make the room a joy to be in.

Paint it all white. Look for some cabinetry to replace what was removed.

I’d find a pretty wallpaper or paint a soft color (not white).

here's a small room w/a charcoal tile herringbone. (you could do this w/just about any type of tile. they even have a porcelain tile that looks like brick. look up taupe color porcelain brick tile)

Tile the wall behind the appliances, get a new cabinet or make some shelving, a cool light, bar for hanging clothes, a drying rack.

you could even do a wall mural that looks like brick. or stencil brick. or get tile that looks like brick. lol

pay attention to these pictures and how they make the most out of storage. everything is DIY

hey, hey thats the size of my laundry room except I have an extra 2.5 feet to one side where a laundry tub with storage below is. And a door to outside opposite the interior door. I suggest you not get front loaders unless they are stacked (so you can put shelves to the side). Front loaders need to have the door open when not in use and that eats up floor space. If you like your 1970's floor paint the walls a honey colour to coordinate.

Laundry days are my exercise day--carrying baskets of clothes to the dining room to fold and delicates upstairs to the guest room where I have a drying rack.

Second Rho suggestion of not getting a stacked set. IMO they take more elbow room. And sticking with the top load washer gives more space for moving laundry to the dryer.

Great point…so if you get stacked, they should go in the far corner away from the door. Storage closer to the door is easier to access too!

If keeping the washer and dryer, add a closed door cabinet over the washer and a clothes rod over the dryer. Add two towel bars - one next to the washer and one next to the dryer. The one next to the washer is for random dirty or wet things that need to go in the wash but never made it to a hamper. The one next to the dryer is for drying the occasional thing fresh from the washer. Once you've finished removing the old wallpaper, prime the walls with white primer. Paint to match your off white trim or put up some new wallpaper.

Actually, that is sort of a poor space for stacking. Why? Because unless you get the one model that you can change the door swing on you will be forced to either work crammed into the corner between wall and w/d doors or have the w/d doors near the entry door, blocking it. Been there, done that. Which is probably why I don’t like stacked washer/dryer.

This would be a great place for a pocket door if it is feasible.
