Can someone help me please?

hi guys, so basically i have just had my bathroom completely redecorated with new tiles and bathroom furniture etc. I am now in a dilemma and that has been caused by myself as I have asked the builders to take the cabinet higher than it was previously placed as it was way too close to the water tap and since my basin/sink is not so large and is closer to the wall so every time my husband bent down to wash his face it hit his head as the mirror cabinet is quite spacious.

SO the dilemma is that i NOW FEEL i have placed the cabinet way too high. I can still see myself up to shoulders as I am 5'3 however anyone who is 5 ft and below isn't able to see whole of their face or any of their face such as my mother which who is 5ft and she can barely see half of her face in the mirror. I feel really sad as if i now place the cabinet down by few inches again my builder says it might crack the tile if he drills in it again (bear in mind its porcelain tile and isn't cheap either) and secondly lets say if he does refit the cabinet without cracking the tile, the two massive ugly holes on the upper tiles will show. I AM NOW stuck and feel so upset is there anything i could do so bathroom cabinet becomes height friendly for my guests and family. :( is there any other alternative? please help as this has really messed up my mood as i feel so hurt messing up my brand new bathroom's look. :(

I have no idea why that cabinet was moved at all and honestly now IMO put it back where it was and replace the damaged tiles if possible or if that is not going to be possible remove the cabinet and put a huge mirror there , I always hate contractors that just obey with no comment about a really poor choice before doing the job. this is one of those times sometimes clients do not know what they don't know

I'm sorry to say that is installed way too high for most people. You weren't able to recess the medicine cabinet? It's up to you whether you move it down since as you say you will have to buy new tile, but that will be the only way to solve the problem. When you reinstall it, maybe you can split the difference between how it used to be and how it is now? But the way it was before is the way those things are usually installed.

@kandrewspa exactly! i understand its my own fault but it was my husband who pushed me to move it up and at the end of day i told him he installed it perfectly! i don't know how he thought it was too close to tap blah bah. to be honest all these times he is been away and im having to do everything myself obviously it made things worse. On top of that my builder is one of those who doesn't want extra work well pretty much all builders are like that and he is scared me before moving it upward by saying '' if you only move it up by 2-3 inches it will crack the tile'' so i got him to take it higher. so my husband and builder both confused me and now i am left with this stupid disaster. but thank you for your help <3

Can you get a taller medicine cabinet? Or what about getting a piece of mirror with a beveled edge to go from below the med cab down to the countertop - make it look like a feature or get one of the round mirrors on a swing arm

Thats a pretty deep medicine cabinet, so your instinct to hang it higher was probably a good one, but it needed to be help in place first to see. Ugh!

I love recessed medicine cabinets and installed 4 in the house I built this past year, but the details have to be planned very carefully.

The problem is that your vanity is too shallow for a surface mounted medicine cabinet, which is why your husband was hitting his head.

What is the depth and height of your medicine cabinet?

Look at Robern medicine cabinets they make a 48" tall and 4" deep one, which I think will give you more height to cover the holes and install it in the lower position. Your husband will have to adapt to a surface that is a bit too close.

Your other option is to give up on having a medicine cabinet and install a large framed mirror.

With a full remodel you would of had the option to recess the medicine cabinet, but sometimes it does require moving some plumbing/electrical components behind the sink area. It can take some creative rerouting of stuff, but it can be done in most cases.

Better a happy husband than short guests not seeing themselves. How many 5' tall people do you even know? Maybe I know one. No one in my family is under 5' 7".

Is this your only bathroom? Can your mother use a different one? If she has to use this one, suction cup a mirror below the medicine cabinet when she comes to visit.

A medicine cabinet is traditionally only around 4” deep. Your appears to be 12” deep kitchen wall cabinet with a mirror added to it is more of a toilet topper cabinet than a medicine cabnet. It is too deep to be suface mounted. It is too deep for a toilet topper as well. Change to a more traditional shallow medicine cabinet and recess it. Or do just a mirror. Move that storage cabinet over the toilet, but you may hit your head there, if it is as deep as it appears.

@Debbi Washburn Thank you. yes i thought of these mirrors being placed below the cabinet. but honestly i know i messed up so bad. and yes you are right moving it up was helpful as it doesn't hit the head. but because its deep if i take it down it will still be in the way so my intentions were to protect his big head haha. but i guess i might have to remove this cupboard and just install a mirror it's just soo upsetting as it won't be refunded and it ain't cheap either. :( but thank you so much for your advice <3

Your vanity is too shallow for a protruding medicine cabinet. Either replace the vanity to one with more depth (front to back) or forget the medicine cabinet and go with a flat mirror. Perhaps you can use the medicine cabinet on a different wall.

It is frustrating - most remodels involve some kind of "oops". Give yourself some grace, this is a relatively small element in a bathroom that looks great; at least three people were involved in the decision so you don't have to take 100% of the responsibility; and while the situation isn't ideal, there are relatively easy workarounds. Instead of forcing the cabinet to work and accepting known PITAs, consider whether it can be relocated, returned or sold. Look for a replacement solution that will cover the holes and maybe even use them.

@JT7abcz thank you so much. I guess its all in the mind afterall as long as we can see our face its not bad. maybe in future when i build extension toilet i can place the cabinet there as for now there is no space in the house haha. thank you for your advice<3

@chispa thank you so much for the advice. yes my cabinet is quite big in depth. i will see what i can do. i guess a mirror would be the best idea.

Hang in there - these oops seem to happen at some point in every project!

I just wanted to add that we have a similar layout to you and changed out a protruding medicine cab for a streamlined mirror and the bathroom seemed so much bigger and airier - (the bulky med cabinet took up a LOT of visual space) - so skipping the cabinet may end up benefitting the room

There are many homes that function very well without a medicine cabinet. we can’t see the rest of your bathroom, but I would remove it, put a karge mirror in its place and figure out other ways to store what’s in the cabinet.

Is there another wall where you could put the medicine cabinet? I would use cardboard boxes to make a mock-up of it and try it above the toilet or on a different wall. Maybe see if the manufacturer offers alternate, non-mirror doors. Then just put a big mirror above your sink and everyone will be happy.
